Drew Brees Honored for Charity Work in Cresent City

By BRITTAN DUHON On June - 16 - 2009
When Drew Brees signed with the New Orleans Saints as a free agent, he knew he had to provide the promise of hope to the hurricane-ravaged city. But more importantly, he wanted to actually deliver it. Just telling children in New Orleans that he wanted to help raise money to overhaul schools, parks, and athletic fields wouldn't do. He wanted to make sure "Operation Kids: Rebuilding Dreams" became a reality. "To put yourself on the line and say you're going to raise $1.8 million, that's kind of a gutsy deal especially when, I think, there had been a lot of broken promises down ...

A Stream Of Sports Consciousness

By Domenic Scarano On June - 15 - 2009
I am going to try and make this a weekly thing, because my thoughts are so frequent and varied. Instead of focusing on one subject sometimes it's just easier to not focus on anything. Let me know some of your thoughts! What is the Ultimate Goal of a Sports Fan?   How can you compare anyone to Michael Jordan?   How do you know if you are true sports fan?   Why doesn’t Andy Roddick get enough credit?   I wish Francesco Totti didn’t act like Brett Favre…                Why is it called the Super Bowl? What’s wrong with NFL Championship?   Speaking of which, the Masters is a little cocky for a ...
With the Stanley Cup and NBA Finals just now concluding, many sports fans have had to face the dubious task of who to root for now that their team missed the playoffs or got knocked out. There are fans who just cheer for their team, and could care less about the greater excitement the actual sport provides.  For them, it doesn't matter.  But for others, this process of team selection can be either very technical in nature or rather whimsical.  In my case, I need to cheer for someone, and it makes the results more interesting. Now, my main sport of ...
Today marked the 11th straight win for the Colorado Rockies, tying the Boston Red Sox for the longest streak in the current 2009 season. But, it was not special for just that reason.  It was also the first game I attended at Coors Field in 2009, the 17th straight year I have been privileged to attend in a row. The Rockies were amazing for their 11th straight game, bringing back great, warm memories of 2007, in which they finished 20-of-21 and successfully brought back the LoDo Loonies, including myself. The Rockies found themselves down 1-0 early, but tied the game ...

How Twitter Is Changing Sports

By Christopher Hansen On June - 14 - 2009
There is little doubt that the social networking site Twitter has made a rapid ascent in popularity. However, not all the news is good. Sixty percent of new users do not return. Among the 40 percent that do return, many are probably sports fans, sports journalists, sports teams, sports websites, and sports blogs. There is a very healthy community of sports tweeters. Take a look at the numbers: There are 579 NBA twitter users on the popular WeFollow directory and 365 NFL, 252 MLB, 192 NHL, and 6566 categorized as sports. There are also 311 MMA twitter users. And these numbers only ...

Gone But Not Forgotten: Players we Have Lost in Sports

By How Bout Them Mets On June - 13 - 2009
When tragedy strikes the world of sports, it always leaves an everlasting imprint in our lives. No matter if we cheered the player, booed the player or hated the player, we always respected the player. This slide show is so we never forget the guys we rooted for, the ones that could have been so great... but were stolen from us early in life. Never take for granted what you have, no matter how small or big it is, just be happy that we got to open our eyes today. Here is a list of players that left our world ...
Listeners are brain-washed daily..by talking head media people, who spew their rhetoric over the air ways, either via television or radio and like programed machines. The sound of the simultaneous click happens. Talk shows about sports or politics are blasting over the air ways. The mere sheep who soak up this fountain of miss information closely have their eyes peeled and ears perked up. Ready to run back, to the first person they can find to tell them what they heard. Meanwhile those with brains shake their heads at the idiotic, who have no clue, how to argue for them selves, instead ...

Rise and Say No to Surrender

By Sudeshna Banerjee On June - 12 - 2009
This particular poem reflects the mind and the spirit of all sportsmen and sportswomen. It is what makes them come back from jaws of defeat to snatch victory; it is what makes them rise up and shine every single day despite the failures that come their way. Enjoy this glimpse into the mind and heart of the sporting spirit. - Moments of solitude make us ponder and wish a few things would have been a little different...Perhaps the mirth had lasted a little bit longer...Perhaps the pain had not been so excruciating...And then the introspection. The post-mortem as we struggle to embrace ...

Childhood Innocence of Love For Sports Disappears With Age

By Khalid Siddiqui On June - 12 - 2009
As I sat at home last night watching the second coming of Real Madrid's Galacticos saga unfold, I was suddenly overcome with a melancholic sense of disillusionment. You've seen mottos such as 'For the Love of the Game' and 'Fairplay Awards' being doled out, but you begin to wonder whether that really is the case. As the level of sophistication in every walk of life has increased with time, the same is now true of sports as well. As I've grown up, I've come to terms with the fact that what they say about "wanting to do in life what you love the most" is mostly ...
