Local Event Sports Association

Imagine the following scenario on ESPN's SportsCenter: "Today, NFL owners approved the sale of the St. Louis Rams to conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh." Actually, it would not have to be SportsCenter, as it would certainly be a rare case where the sale of a sports franchise attracts the attention of CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC. I am sure Keith Olbermann would have much to say about this, while Sean Hannity would note the liberal media's outrage over the "politicization of sports." Now, before I go deeper into this topic, I must first credit both blogger MJD (real name Matthew J. Darnell) ...

Commercial Culture: Michael Jordan’s Other Legacy

By Andrew Nuschler On June - 10 - 2009
"Sometimes I dream that he is me, you've got to see that's how I dream to be... like Mike, if I could be like Mike. I wanna be, I wanna be like Mike." We all know the iconic Gatorade commercial that launched Michael Jordan's fame into the next stratosphere, a launch on which the NBA rode shotgun. Accompanied by the other big guns from the 1980s—Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, etc.—His Airness played arguably the lead role in taking the NBA's popularity to new heights. The addictive ad and larger campaign that blossomed from it played no small part. Sure, Air Jordans were already ...

When the US Media Talks About European Matters

By Jose V. Rodrigues On June - 10 - 2009
I hate it when the American Media open their mouth to talk about Europe. Why? Because 99.9 percent of the time, they're wrong. This manifest was triggered by an ESPN report on racism in European football, which was an anthem to the ignorance of the American media. Yes, there is racism in Europe, but I can not accept that Europe's image will be blurred because of the ignorance of some sport's writers, trying to understand a complex political problem. I have had enough.   Strike One Kameni being abused by home fans—Espanyol fans that throw bananas at his own goalkeeper. Well, that is wrong! Freeze the video during ...
Have we reached the apex for paying for athletic skills? If what just happened in the MLB draft doesn't highlight that situation, maybe nothing in modern history can. A college undergrad pitcher, Stephen Strasburg, from San Diego State, may end up with a $50 million contract. 50 freaking million dollars! What has he accomplished? What value over the next two years will he produce? How many players make the big leagues in the first two years? Winning 20 games in the AAA leagues in front of around 5,000 fans per game is worth this much? Maybe this is just a microcosm of what ...
As if Terrell Owens didn't get enough attention, he'll be one of the athletes appearing on The Superstars, beginning later this month. And John Salley is currently degrading himself on I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! What is it about athletes that makes them want to go on reality television shows? It has to be the competition, right? A new way for them to prove that they are the best? Sometimes it goes smoothly. For a six-year stretch, athletes have either won Dancing With the Stars or come in second. Players such as Emmit Smith, ...
I'm sure you've all read one of these before, but I haven't written one, so I'm throwin' my hat in. Here is what I think are the ten best sports movies of all time. Don't worry, Blue Chips isn't one of them. I just find the thought of Shaq acting (Shaqting?) amusing. I'm sure you will all differ in opinion. Tell me what you think in comments.

The NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Go to the Movies

By Matt King On June - 8 - 2009
Do you ever wonder just how talented our athletes today are? Sure, they are fast, athletic, agile, and strong... but can they act? With the NBA Finals getting into full swing and the Stanley Cup winding down, I wondered what would happen if some of the players tried to fill certain roles in sports movies. Obviously, they would have to try something close to type. I don't expect them to go out and start winning Oscars on their first try. They can't all be Shaq.
...Brett Favre, the greatest retirement story ever, had surgery and it was in the third segment of ESPNEWS's never ending half and hour. It was sanwiched beyween Avery Johnson talking about the adjustments the Orlando Magic need to make and Tina Fay's sister, er, Sarah Palin, er, the Yankee/Ray highlights. The greatest franchise in MLB history won with two late runs. Did anyone else see the mistake when the ESPNEWS logo popped up in the middle of the Tiger Woods interview? Anyone else hear Tiger use the word gnarley?
When we talk about "Giant Killers" there are always two sides of the coin—the giant and, of course, the killers. Killers may be great but nonetheless, giants have their own story deserving recognition. Let me tell you mine... OUR team, OUR school, OUR pride, OUR tragic ending.   The year was 2007. Our school was the University of the East Red Warriors, one of the country's best basketball programs that crafted out 18 University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP—Philippine counterpart of the NCAA) championship. Numerous Philippine basketball legends attended the university including the likes of Baby Dalupan,  Robert Jaworski, Allan Caidic, Jerry Cordinera ...
When summer rolls around and it's time for the family to plan their annual vacation, scenic locations such as The Bahamas and Hawaii immediately come to mind. While Mom and Dad fantasize about tropical beaches and islands, the excited kids begin to daydream about Disney World, Sea World, and Six Flags. But for some apparent reason, Detroit never enters their long list of ideas. Michigan's largest city is one of the most least desirable places to live or visit in America. The home of Eminem and Kid Rock, the Motor City consists of thousands of scary abandoned homes and boarded up buildings ...
