Why Steve McNair Deserves No Sympathy
On July - 9 - 2009
I have a wealth of respect for what Steve McNair accomplished as an athlete.
No one can take away his obvious football skills, his passion for winning, and his on-field leadership qualities under difficult circumstances.
I have a similar wealth of disdain and a total lack of sympathy for McNair as a husband, a father, and what led to his being murdered.
In light of what has now been revealed by Nashville police, McNair died cheating on his wife, making a decision that will leave his four children without a father and likely believing, as many celebrities and star athletes do, that they ...
Some Lines are Drawn in Sand and Some Lives are Made of Glass
On July - 9 - 2009
One life to live and so many dreams to pursue.
Do men and women choose a game or a sport for the name, fame, or acclaim?
Do they play to win or to lose?
Do they conceive in their imagination to stand up for their passions?
Is it money that motivates, or being considered champions?
Does image matter? The image of being a gladiator, the all-conquering one?
What is it man wants? Why are they in pursuit?
Self-satisfaction? Accolades from peers? Or just inner light?
All these things will perish in time—none of these things are everlasting.
Is it greed, avarice, and malicious to manipulate the masses?
Is it ...
Double Feature: In Memory of Chris Naghski, My Friend and a Great Sports Fan
On July - 9 - 2009
Chris Naghski passed away last week at the age of 29.
Chris was a great man and an even better friend.
“SkiDog,” as he was affectionately referred to by his friends, loved to watch and talk about The Wire, The Sopranos and The Big Lebowski.
Chris also loved the world of sports.
Below is a brief tribute to “SkiDog” and the teams that he gave his heart and soul to.
1) Chris loved the New York Yankees. For whatever reason, he particularly adored that fat bastard David “Boomer” Wells. When “Boomer” was knocked out in a dingy Manhattan diner 5 years ago by an Italian ...
Man-Ram: “Crowd-Pleasing” (aka Mo’ Money) or ‘Who’s Laughing Now?”
On July - 9 - 2009
The audacity of MLB (and Man-Ram) to throw his 50-day suspension in our face as a token of MLB's efforts to "clean up" the game made me laugh my ass off. He and the front office of Major League Baseball have no concept of what it takes to truly clean up their sport.
A 50-day suspension that includes a 10-day "re-hab" session in the Minors, just like any player that is truly injured and playing his way back into shape, is a ludicrous example of how minor MLB looks at the juicing issue.
Forget that the Players Association has railroaded this ...
Hear Ye, Hear Ye: NFL Players with Double, Triple Lives
On July - 8 - 2009
I know some folks don't want to hear this. The lives of some young players (NFL football and otherwise) may be endangered because of poor choices.
Take a good look into the eyes of your mate. Can you read them? Is he or she faithful?
Does someone you know step outside of the fidelity hoop when no one is looking?
Can we minimize danger and embarrassment if we try (a little harder) to walk a strait path, clinging to a value system of a higher order?
Years ago, I remember a young man named B.W. Cheeks. His life was cut short, according to the rumor, because of a situation with ...
Steve McNair, Magic Johnson, Jim Brown and the First Amendment
On July - 8 - 2009
This has been an interesting and more than entertaining world of sports over the last week or so.
It started with Jim Brown proclaiming that Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan are a disappointment and ended with “Magic” Johnson proclaiming that Michael Jackson made him a better point guard.
What a wonderful country we live in that allows people to get on television or radio and say whatever they want, no matter how ridiculous it might sound.
More unsettling for me than the thoughtless words of our athletes is the heartless and scathing words of our media talking heads and any "Joe Public" given ...
Just Saying, Is All… | The Best Reason To Root for Manny Ramirez
On July - 8 - 2009
Sometimes you really do reap what you sow.
Manny Ramirez is a blissful idiot. He’s also no one’s fool. After serving a 50-game drug suspension, Manny still maintains that he didn’t mean any harm—which would be less plausible if it weren’t such a fitting sign of the times.
Negligence means turning a blind eye to the rules.
Nihilism, on the other hand, means turning a deaf ear to the truth.
I’m not suggesting that Ramirez is clean. An innocent man never equivocates, and Manny’s fuzzy denials speak for themselves. But let’s not be too hard on No. 99. In a league where all values ...
Nicknames: Where Have All The Great Ones Gone?
On July - 7 - 2009
Sweetness.
All you need say is one simple word, and any football fan with a lick of fandom in them knows exactly who you are talking about.
This is none other than the great Walter Payton.
The guy who broke Jim Brown's infamous rushing total of 12,312 yards. The man who ran with such power and grace that he epitomized the very name thrust upon him.
Where have these great nicknames gone?
Yes, I realize that the times have changed. They have changed so much that we can literally watch today's greatest athletes during any game
or highlight
or commercial that the world sees fit.
But, on the other hand, the times ...
Top 10 Entertainers of the Sports World
On July - 7 - 2009
For the full article, including videos, please go to OnlineSportsFanatic.com.
We all love guys like Jim Carrey, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Steve Carell, and all the others who never fail to bring us entertainment.
While athletes are often given the stereotype of being deadbeats when outside of the sports world, there are always athletes out there bringing us entertainment in another form.
There are many professional athletes who attempt to be more than their title poses. Some guys succeed, and some fail, although sometimes we can't help but laugh at the ones who epically fail.
Sure, some may be annoying, but they still add a certain zest to ...
Delving Inside the Minds of Irrational Fans (aka “IFs”)
On July - 7 - 2009
Before I joined Bleacher Report about two months ago, my discussions about sports were pretty tame.
My friends and I pretty much take the same approach when it comes to sports. While we are fervent in our defense of our favorite teams and players (my friend Kyle and I have had some epic Montana vs. Marino debates), we also are able to discuss our favorite teams logically and rationally.
But in my time on this site, I have encountered a different kind of fan—the kind of fan who doesn't respond to reason or logic.
These people are the irrational fans.
For the sake of ...
