I was reading an article earlier today that mentioned John Kruk.  What a corporate shill he has become.  May as well put Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse ears on his head.  I'm ashamed he's a fellow West Virginian.  Call me the John Kruk Dixie Chick. He used to be cool.  Many of you are familiar with this story.  I've heard two different versions.  The original, and more believable, was that a lady was with her kids and saw Kruk walking through a stadium corridor, in uniform, smoking a cigarette. She said something like, "I can't believe a professional athlete is smoking!" Kruk's response, "Lady, ...

Error Analysis in Sports Articles on NFL, NBA, or Other

By Damali Binta Yael On September - 1 - 2009
So we think our sports articles (and analysis) are perfect. Let’s look at some possible ways of introducing misconceptions or error into a sports report. From a broader perspective, we are always attempting to approach a perfect model, an improved description of a situation in sports, and in life. The idea is to remember that all things are subject to adjustments, iterations, improvement, with the hope that a convergence to excellence and near perfection will occur. In math, when we talk about a limit concept, we realize that the “approaching behavior” is what is important. A function may not actually reach a limit, but it ...

Erin Andrews on Oprah…Why?

By Benny Hsu On September - 1 - 2009
This will be her first and last interview on the story. But who really wanted to hear it? To me, it seems so long ago that Erin Andrews was in the news. She’s been on vacation from ESPN since the video of someone peeping in on her in her hotel room was posted online. It’s been about two months since it first came out. Andrews has been an afterthought in a summer filled with sports stories. But she doesn’t want to kill the story. Corresponding with her return to the sidelines, the show has already been taped and will be aired on the Sept. ...

Fanish or Foolish, Issue No. 1: Throwing Trash on the Track

By Kelly Crandall On September - 1 - 2009
Every day at 4 p.m. ET, ESPN2 broadcasts its SportsNation show, in which the biggest issues around the sports world are discussed among the two hosts, Colin Cowherd and Michelle Beadle.  One segment of the show is titled "Fanish or Foolish?"; in it, Cowherd and Beadle debate whether an action was either something that an average fan would do or something that was completely uncalled-for and foolish. With all the drama in NASCAR, the fans are never ones to sit back and let things happen. NASCAR fans make sure they are heard and they are heard as loud as they can be.  Which means ...

Simply put, we’re coming up on the best time of the year to be a sports fan.   We’re quickly closing in on the start of ...

Pirates, Reds, September, and Pop Culture

By Illya Harrell On September - 1 - 2009
Any U.S. white kid who went through puberty during the 1980s and is not familiar with the work of the recently deceased film director John Hughes is either Amish, has a brain more than a tad addled by booze and/or drugs, or is currently in a coma. "Yeah, but the thing is, I'm kinda like the leader. Kinda like the king of the dipsh*ts." Over one-quarter of their remaining 32 games, the Cincinnati Reds play the Pittsburgh Pirates. That quote from Anthony Michael Hall's character in Hughes' cinematic masterpiece, Sixteen Candles, is relevant to the race for the cellar of the NL Central. With ...
