Oakland Raiders: Forgive Us Our Debts, Eldridge Dickey

By Damali Binta Yael On October - 22 - 2009
I entered a computer center on Oct. 21, 2009. The clock was ticking. The computer was slow. I noticed a man next to me. His work was going smoothly. There was an "hour-glass" turning, round and round on his screen. His computer was fine. The man and I started talking. He is a historian. He is the cousin of Eldridge Dickey, a man drafted as quarterback with the Oakland Raiders. "Eldridge Dickey," I asked the man, "Isn't he the first African American quarterback in the NFL?" The cousin answered, Yes. Immediately, I requested an interview with the man. After all, his account of the life of ...

UW Vs ASU: A Diamond In The Rough, It Wasn’t The Game

By Billee Lorig On October - 22 - 2009
We wandered in here the week of the UW vs Arizona State game after walking two miles from 3rd and Mill in 100 degree weather, in search of liquor and a food. Fortunately for us, this place specializes in both. As you approach, there is patio furniture and seating, with two TVs for outdoor watching of football, baseball ,and golfing. Tall trees with a misting system that provides shade and cooling for sitting in their outdoor liquor and food garden in any type of weather. Judging by its name, one would expect Tempe's Baers Den Bar & Grill aka Frank's Friendly Tavern to be a brewpub filled with upwardly ...

Why Deadspin Had to Publish the ESPN Horndog Glossier

By Ethan Stanislawski On October - 22 - 2009
Deadspin, like all of Gawker Media blogs, is at its best when it is serving more as a media watchdog than as a source of serious journalistic reporting. Deadspin was founded as a blog without "access, favor, or discretion," and the source of its creation, as noted by Will Leitch in God Save The Fan , is that the media that reports on sports have gotten in bed with the sports teams they cover. It had the financial and media resources to do so better than anything else, and its purpose was ultimately to improve the experience for sports fans who ...

Some Sports “News” Just Doesn’t Matter

By Christopher Leone On October - 21 - 2009
When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is tune my TV to ESPNEWS. Since I'm usually in a rush in the mornings, I feel the need to get as caught-up in the world of sports as I possibly can in the limited amount of time I have, and ESPNEWS is the best network with which to do it. The expanded Bottom-Line they have gives me everything I need to know. Except for, you know, when it gives me things that I don't need to know. No, I'm not referring to my Bostonian heritage here and claiming that ...
I like soccer, but it hasn’t always been that way. As a kid, I used to hate it. Played it when I was in second grade, thought it was boring, quit, and never looked back. It was a lot of running for nothing, a lot of standing in the pouring rain, and a lot of unnecessary shots to the head. It just wasn’t my thing. As a teenager, I got back into soccer by watching the World Cup. At first it was a nice segue to my afternoon nap, but after a while I actually began to watch the games. Played at its ...

Green (LEED) Stadiums

By Collin Cooper On October - 20 - 2009
There are a lot of environmental buzz words going on right now...sustainability, Green and Climate Change, etc. Sure you hear these words all the time (mostly by politicians) but did you know that there are stadiums that have taken being environmentally responsible to a whole other level? Some of these stadiums have even been rated as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ) certified. Quite an accomplishment when you think about what goes on at a stadium; Parking, lights, concessions, construction materials... etc. The stadiums listed have either accomplished there LEED certification or are on pace to meet the criteria. Medlar Field at Lubrano Park ...
Hold up! What's going on? You say you are our friends but you keep hurling insults our way. You say you are our foes and you keep "dumping on us" and "talking trash." I have an answer for this situation. In your spare time, read Tom LaMarre's book entitled, "Oakland Raiders, Stadium Stories." On page 38-39, you will read about an insulting situation on the football field that got Gene Upshaw fired up. The details are there, but I want to focus on the fiery part. The book says that Gene Upshaw asked, "You what?" Here is the excerpt: "...Upshaw asked middle linebacker Willie ...
An athlete at any level—whether it's a local recreational soccer player, a college basketball guard, or the World's No. 1 ranked tennis player—has felt the desire to win. This burning passion to succeed is a great mindset to possess, but it can also bring about negative thoughts. Easily put, being successful brings about pressure. What kind of pressure do you believe the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft feels each year once the season is about to begin? What kind of pressure does the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys have to deal with entering each season? How about the point guard at Duke, the ...
I confess. Despite being the most happily married man this side of the Rockies, I'm still a sucker for a pretty face. My wife Kate, allows me to look at the menu as long as I promise not to eat from the buffet. And I promise faithfully. Not so much as even a light snack. So, when I saw that Lauren Gardner had joined the Linked-in group, A Glove of Their Own, I approached her to do a story before the ink even cooled. I was familiar with Lauren after seeing her cheer for the Denver Broncos in 2007 and remember ...
Oct. 18, 2009—From the Bleacher Report: "I will not let Nebraska gravitate into mediocrity," said Steve Pederson, then Athletic Director at the University of Nebraska, after firing head coach Frank Solich in 2003. Steve Pederson had acquiesced to the outcry from the loudest corn-critics; those that impatiently demanded an immediate return to the final days of Tom Osborne's tenure when the Corn Husker Nation was awarded three national championships in four years. Those voices were dismissive of the success Solich had enjoyed—National Runner-up and Fiesta Bowl Champion in his second year, two division, and one conference championship in his first four years, and 58 wins in ...
