I Am Thankful For Sports

By Thom Cunningham On November - 26 - 2009
As we prepare for a long day of stuffing our faces with turkey, and get ready to watch the Lions for at least another season, we all reflect on what we are most thankful for. I am thankful for spending the day with my family while we eat and watch football all day together. I am thankful for the health and wealth that I have had the privilege of experiencing for the first 20 years in my life. I am thankful for my love insurance, the friends and family that will love you and stand by you no matter what. Most of ...
A second chance. In life, they’re not always hard to come by. For example, if you hosted Thanksgiving for the first time and burned the turkey, will your hungry/angry guests want to come to your house next year? Maybe not at first, but over the course of the year, and after explaining how you’ve been practicing the art of turkey cooking for the past 11 months, they might give you another shot—a second chance, a do-over, a replay. But in sports, second chances don’t come so easy. In fact, they rarely happen, since there is no “RESET” button outside of your living room. Think back to ...

This Is What I’m Thankful For….

By Greg Eno On November - 25 - 2009
Time to give thanks. I suppose I can muster up the will to do that. It's only once a year, after all. So, here goes... I'm thankful for Army-Navy, even though I never watch it. I'm thankful for Brandon Inge. I'm thankful that a football is shaped the way it is, because you never know how it's going to bounce. Other balls are so predictable. I'm thankful for outdoor stadiums. I'm thankful for the mute button. I'm thankful for the Original Six. I'm thankful for left-handed golfers because they look so cool. ...
With the one-game suspension of longtime Los Angeles Clippers announcers Ralph Lawler and Michael Smith, I am officially at my wits end with the growing hyper-sensitivity that is polluting the American consciousness.   At what point do we draw the line and say enough is enough? We have become so damn sensitive in our continued pursuit of equality that we are beginning to tip the scales toward isolative advantage for the easily offended.   We have spent the last 60 years trying to break away from the mindset of segregation, yet here we stand today, divided into two groups: those who can speak their ...

Weekend Wins Propel No. 1 Findlay Prep to 4-0

By Dustin Lynott On November - 24 - 2009
If the Findlay Prep (NV) basketball squad was looking ahead to their Thanksgiving weekend trip to Peoria, Illinois they kept it a well concealed secret.  Instead, they walked away with two blowout victories at the home-based Henderson International gymnasium.  On Friday, November 20 the Findlay Prep Pilots eventually shook off a pesky Princeton Country Day School 122-90, while Saturday was more of a dominant effort thumping IMG Academy 113-50. Now standing at 4-0 in the beginning stages of the high school basketball season, Findlay Prep hits the road for the first time in the Tournament of Champions in the state of Illinois. The competition promises to be ...

Bleacher Report Has a Head Start On STEM Public Awareness Initiative

By Damali Binta Yael On November - 23 - 2009
Sports is an integral part of the American lifestyle. It is an integral part of education. There are about four broad purposes of sports, according to the American Sports data website: It provides children with "fun" and instant gratification; It fulfills what social psychologists call the "affiliative" need—friendship, and a sense of belonging; It offers the near-term prospect of healthier minds and bodies through physical exercise; For the longer term, its cumulative benefits hold the promise of those favorable "outcomes" associated with youth development. Another website cites ten good reasons to engage young Americans in sports. By participating in youth sports , the young ...

Meyer To Remain In Florida: Where Does Notre Dame Turn Now?

By Henry Ball On November - 23 - 2009
ESPN is reporting that Urban Meyer will remain at Florida, in his own words, "for as long as they will have me!" The announcement coming after rampant speculation that Meyer would be the primary target for Jack Swarbrick, Notre Damn's Athletic Director, who is expected to terminate current head coach Charlie Weis at the end of this season. Swarbrick has not publicly acknowledged that Weis will be fired, only that "the football program will be evaluated at the end of the season." If the evaluation includes a review of the expectations set by Charlie Weis himself, who said theat he was not hired to go ...

A Dog Has Died—Where Are the Michael Vick Haters?

By Calvin W Boaz On November - 23 - 2009
This past Thursday, Uga VII, the four-year-old mascot of the Georgia Bulldogs, passed away from an apparent heart attack. Based on the outrage dog lovers expressed when Michael Vick was reinstated by the NFL, I was expecting a public outcry demanding the banning of animal mascots at college sporting events. However, all I heard was statements of what a loss it was for University of Georgia fans everywhere. An animal dies, and people feel bad for the humans who will no longer see a dog sit in the hot sun for at least three hours—it makes perfect sense to me. There is no ...
