The Wood Is On Fire: Lakewood Wins The Moore League Title
On November - 14 - 2009
It has been more than three decades since the Lakewood Lancers had won the Harry J. Moore League championship in football outright.
On Friday, November 13, Thadd MacNeal's club ended a 35-year wait with 35 points in the second half en route to a 42-6 victory over the Wilson Bruins at Woodrow Wilson Classical High School in Long Beach, California.
The Lancers finish the regular season 9-1 (6-0 in league play) and await their opponent in the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division playoffs.
The championship is Lakewood's first since 1983, when they shared the title with the Long Beach Polytechnic Jackrabbits at 4-0-1 in league play.
After a lackluster first ...
Talking Sports In The War Zone: Madden Mania
On November - 14 - 2009
By Ryan of The Sportmeisters
Ryan of The Sportmeisters is currently deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. While there, he is continuing to write about sports and it’s effect on the troops. This is his latest update.
Sports are a release, whether it be in the states or overseas. To take three hours on a football game, even if it is at midnight or one in the morning, it allows a soldier to take his mind away from the work, and remember a simpler time. The same can be said for video games. For most of us, sports at ...
Sports Movies For The Holiday Season
On November - 13 - 2009
Now that it is November, the Hollywood studios like to come out with their blockbusters for the holiday season.
When it comes to sports movies, the plots are usually the same. Somebody who is unknown joins a down and out team and leads it to victory, usually overcoming some handicaps and personal crises on the way while winning the girl/guy depending on the gender.
Or there are tragedies about athletes with incurable diseases like Brian Picolo, Lou Gehrig, etc.
But how about some really different sports movies for a change. If Hollywood would use its imagination, there are plenty of different plots ...
Is Jay Mariotti Nothing More Than a Bigot From Western, Pa.?
On November - 13 - 2009
(Spare me the innocuous accusation that I am playing the race card, because that insinuates that I am not adhering to facts, when this is nothing but fact).
Seems like Ozzie Guillen's body language said it all. But here is what I'm saying.
If you are a regular reader of my articles, you would know about my ongoing topic of questioning the integrity of ESPN employees, or even my official boycott of ESPN.
More precisely, reporting the truth about the malicious gossiper known as Jay Mariotti of Around the Horn , and ESPN's blatant attempt to assassinate the career of Raiders coach Tom Cable ...
What Sport Do Ninjas Play? Sepak Takraw
On November - 13 - 2009
The most common explanation of Sepak Takraw is just volleyball with feet. This is like saying hockey is just soccer on ice, or that squash is just tennis in a box.
Sepak Takraw more closely resembles volleyball with bicycle kicks. If you’ve ever found yourself asking, “If I were a ninja, what sport would I play?”, well, you have your answer.
Don’t believe me? Watch this .
According to legend, Sepak Takraw was first played by a Hindu god and his gang of monkeys. Skateboarding has similar beginnings, since Tony Hawk is widely considered a Hindu god.
The game grew in popularity throughout Southeast ...
Unofficial Interview With Mark McGwire, Cardinals New Hitting Coach
On November - 12 - 2009
Introducing Mark McGwire Will Be Tricky
Oh…MAN! The St. Louis Cardinals are having trouble coming up with ways to introduce their new hitting coach, Mark McGwire , because…well…he’s a douchebag. McGwire literally went into hiding after the congressional hearing about performance enhancing drugs and now has thrust himself in to the spotlight by aligning himself with his former team in a coaching role. The air of intrigue surrounds Busch Memorial Stadium is at an all-time high, and if the PR team of the Cards isn’t suited to handle this particular intro, I’m here to ...
Ohio State University: Hineygate And Civility Live Here
On November - 12 - 2009
Time for my very cool pilgrimage to Columbus for an Ohio State game. My good friend moved his family up there from West Virginia in 2004 for better employment possibilities. He then purchased Buckeye season passes like any good person from Cols would.
Spreading the wealth, he hosts several of us to each individual game. This year, I get Iowa. Lucky guy I am.
Concerning the Buckeye-Hawkeye matchup, my friend and I had a telephone conversation this week that went something like this...
Me: Too bad Northwestern beat Iowa. Rather had given OSU the chance to end the unbeaten streak.
Him: Uh...if we win, we go to the ...
The Blame Game: When Student Athletes Go Bad
On November - 12 - 2009
Let the media onslaught and finger pointing begin.
Anybody that knows anything about the history of the SEC can speculate where the blame falls when student athletes go bad. "Hey it's the coaches fault!" "No wait it's the programs fault, oh yeah...that is the coach." The problem with all this is that nobody ever places the blame where it belongs, the student athletes.
Now before you crucify me for not mentioning the parents, understand that the parents kinda leave the picture when the kids arrive on campus. The coaches err..uh program can only babysit these guys so much. They have them at practice, ...
Student Suspended for Being a Cincinnati Bengals Fan
On November - 12 - 2009
In a despicable display of social interventionism, an eighth grade student a Garfield Middle School in Hamilton, OH was disciplined because of his haircut. Dustin Reader received an in-school suspension for violating the school's code of conduct, which prohibits "unnaturally colored hair, extreme/distracting makeup, haircuts and hairstyles."
The young man must have had a creative four-letter word shaved on the side of his head. Surely, there was an obscene image on the back of his dome.
No and no.
Mr. Reader had his barber shave tiger stripes on his head and a large "B" on the back to show support for his favorite ...
Nick Kypreos, Mike Danton, and a Classy Act By a Classy Guy!
On November - 12 - 2009
Only hours before the airing of the interview by Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos, some one posed the question to me, "Do you think that Mike Danton will play again?"
My "knee jerk" reaction was, "Man I hope not, this is the NHL, not the NFL!"
Before I get any deeper into that, please join me in giving a big "shout out" to a good guy and one of my favorite sports radio personalities, Alex Seixeiro .
As we all know, Remembrance Day is a day set aside to honor and remember those brave men an women who have sacrificed in order for us ...
