Local Event Sports Association

Archive for November, 2009

I've often wondered why talk radio is a medium that is almost completely dominated by two topics: sports, and politics.   People talk about a lot of stuff everyday, and lord knows that every other venue of mass communication isn't limited to those two topics.   Television, the Internet, and print media boast a variety of entertainment options for their viewers and readers, unless you're watching a serial drama, in which case your slices of life include the life of a lawyer, the life of a doctor, or the life of a police officer or any combination therein.   (I'm thinking of pitching a show about ...
The tragic shooting at Ft. Hood, Texas on Thursday and the shootings in Orlando, Florida on Friday make me realize that there is a sort of irony in sports. That is, while events like these remind us just how unimportant sports are as compared to real life situations, it is also the time when sports are needed most of all.  We often use sports as an escape from the real world. Not to remove focus from grieving families, but to take our minds off of the depressing world around us, and allow us to find some joy in an otherwise crazy world. Gunmen who rampage and kill innocent ...

Runner Meb Keflezighi is All-American Through and Through

By Michael Jee On November - 5 - 2009
For the first time since 1982, an American won the men’s race at the New York City Marathon.   While most, New Yorkers included, spent the better part of Sunday recovering from a Halloween-induced drunken stupor, Meb Keflezighi bested thousands of runners from around the world to cross the finish line first in 2:09:15.  Many had written him off as too old, especially after he failed to qualify for the last Olympics in Beijing after breaking his hip.   For some people, like CNBC Sports Business Reporter Darren Rovell, Keflezighi’s accomplishment seemed insignificant and somehow invalid.  Rovell wrote a joke of an editorial in ...
I'll make this simple.  In the recent months, there has been a backlash at the NFL for dropping Rush Limbaugh from the group bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams. Limbaugh's defenders have argued that it violated free speech or ran amuck of free-speech.  The irony is that, it was the result of Limbaugh's own words, in more than one way. Limbaugh speaks his mind, or at least what he thinks his audience wants to hear.  That doesn't play well with everyone.  Not everyone is a fan of Limbaugh, some are even angered by him. Some in the media even quoted things that Limbaugh never ...

The Ten Most Annoying Types of Football Fans

By Mike Foster On November - 5 - 2009
There has never once been a sporting experience in my life where I did not find one of the attendees excessively unpleasant. Whether it be high school, pee wee, college, or NFL, the annoying fans are sure to show up. They take on many forms, but the one thing they all have in common is that they are completely clueless as to how much everyone around them wants them to leave. Annoying fans can even catch you outside of a game, whether it be at a sports bar, a college classroom, or some delusional stranger who spotted the college logo embroidered on ...
We in Raider Nation have long asserted that ESPN "had it out" for Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders.  In the past year, that idea has gone from mere complaints of perception to blatantly clear to objective observers of ESPN coverage of the Raiders. Though I cannot prove who has done what and why, I do wonder aloud, "Why does ESPN undermine the Raiders and Al Davis?" Davis has long represented what I had long thought were the sympathies of the, "East Coast Media."  As we have learned in recent weeks, many NFL owners are to the right of Rush Limbaugh even ...

David Branch: Out On a Limb?

By Eric Warren On November - 5 - 2009
David Branch is President of the Canadian Hockey League, as well as Commissioner of the Ontario Hockey League. He is also human. There has been a great deal made in the last day or so regarding the suspension of Micheal Liambas for his hit on Ben Fanelli. While a great many people and sports personalities are agreeing with it, I'm just not sure it was the right call. After watching his interview on 'Off The Record ,' and watching the replay of the hit repeatedly, I not only think that Branch was wrong in the severity of the punishment, I think ...

When a man's face is lined deeply, it prompts me to wonder where has he been, what has he accomplished, and how he feels about his life. The code name for the man above is JCI. He is pensive. He is smart. He shows emotion only during certain, very private circumstances. I asked to take a picture of JCI in Nov. 2009. He agreed. The beauty of the picture is the sunlight and how it shines so vividly, enhancing the image of a man, now 66 years old. The beauty in the picture is the inspiration for this article. The picture touched me, deeply. ...
Had people been more willing to ask questions and educate themselves, they would have been more skeptical of predatory lenders.  That though does not absolve the Wall Street businesses that spent and invested beyond their means, and thus aggressively pursued naive customers. Anyone who follows my articles would know that I don't back down from what I believe, and that I detest corporate news in all forms: MSNBC, FOX News, CNN, E!, ESPN. They're all the same to me, and the fact is that, the jobs are transmutable.  Reporters from ESPN have left for employment with networks like MSNBC to cover subjects unrelated ...
