Double Standard: Why the Media Scrutiny of Tiger Woods Shows a Racist Tinge

By David Xaviel is the Real Mr. X On December - 19 - 2009
Parental Advisory Warning: This article contains information not suitable for unsupervised readers under the age of 17, or those who are easily offended. Please consider the necessity and context of the offensive words used.  I also suspect that people will either love or hate this article, so please leave any comments, while I appreciate respectful disagreement as much as I appreciate praise. I have written only one other article on the Tiger Woods saga, but leave it to me to find an interesting angle in which I call white people hypocrites. I would know.  I've been a white hypocrite.  I don't believe that I make ...

Rugby Star Gareth Thomas Confirms He is Gay

By Dumont Walker On December - 19 - 2009
Cardiff Blues utility back line player, and Wales international superstar Gareth Thomas rocked the rugby world with his recent announcement stating he is a gay. While some of his teammates and Cardiff Blues head coach Scott Johnson have known this since 2006 when Thomas told them, this is the first time Gareth made his sexuality known to the public. This is a groundbreaking announcement and makes Gareth Thomas the first openly gay rugger who is still playing. While it is difficult to gauge the reaction to Thomas' announcement, at first glimpse it appears the response has ...
The death of Chris Henry is a senseless tragedy...but perhaps not for the reason you would first think.   And Tiger Woods, in the parlance of the fictional 1950s star Ricky Ricardo, has some "splainin' to do"...to a shrink?   First of all, allow me to extend my best wishes to the family that has lost a husband-to-be and, most importantly, a father, as Henry leaves behind three children under the age of four: daughter DeNayla, three, and son Chris Jr., two, and DeMarcus, one.   Henry’s demise came as the direct result of his final faulty decision, the last in a painfully long string of ...

A Serious Look at Tiger Woods Scandal…Sort Of

By Greg Riot On December - 18 - 2009
Why Pay Attention to the Tiger Woods Scandal?  Because It’s Important! All joking aside, the Tiger Wood scandal actually might be the most important single event in sports to happen in maybe this decade. Sure, in sports a lot of great things, and bad things have happened this past decade, but the Tiger Woods scandal may transcend all of those things.  Why?  Because unlike the steroid scandal in baseball, unlike Michael Jordan’s issues in the 1990’s, Tiger is a single player, a single entity that controlled, and still in a way controls, a lot of money ...
The following is part of a weekly series in which writer Todd Civin presents the lighter side of the Boston Breakers of the WPS. The league prides itself in the down-to-earth nature and approachability of its athletes, and Civin believes that "Getting Silly with the Breakers" is an fun-filled way to create a comfortable bond between the fans and the professional athletes who are the Boston Breakers. A special thanks to Erica Hunt, the communications director for the team, as well as the players themselves for making this approach possible. After three weeks of "Getting Silly With the Breakers" by interviewing ...

Tiger Woods Is Finally Making Some Intelligent Decisions

By Michael Fitzpatrick On December - 18 - 2009
Several news outlets are now reporting that residents of Tiger Woods’ exclusive Isleworth Community have seen the world’s No. 1 player out hitting golf balls at night. The residents claim that Woods has been coming home for therapy sessions with his wife, Elin, and then heading to the golf course to hit a large number of balls under the cover of darkness. Well, it sounds like Woods may finally be making some intelligent decisions. First, despite reports circulating about his impending divorce, he appears to be making at least some kind of an effort to save his marriage. And second, he’s playing golf! There are ...

Gene Wojciechowski, Just Shut Up About Tiger Woods

By Brendan Majev On December - 18 - 2009
Okay, I'll admit it. I'm not one of BR's regular writers, never have been, and I'm usually most active from the end of the NFL season to the draft. By active, I mean writing my mocks. Still, that doesn't stop me from showing up here regularly to check what's been significant—BR is a voice of reason where there are actually different opinions, especially compared to NFL.com, or more importantly, the famed "Worldwide Leader in Sports." Yeah, that's you, ESPN. I will be the first to admit that I LOVE watching Sportscenter. I worship it, I probably average watching it every day (sure ...
After sitting out his first season of college football, former West Virginia wide receiver, Chris Henry, began to live—as a football star—in 2003. Henry became a starter for Rich Rodriguez’ Mountaineers and didn’t stop there. After catching 41 passes, scoring 10 touchdowns, and gaining just over 1000 yards, in his first active season, Henry was named Big East Freshman of the Year and was named to the All-Big East second-team in 2003. Henry was only the second player in school history to gain over 1000 yards in a single season, with 209 of those yards coming in one game, against Syracuse. Chris continued to ...

Cycle for Hope: An Interview with Nathan Srigley

By James Ryan On December - 17 - 2009
Prepare to be inspired... Nathan Srigley is a 24-year old Niagara cyclist who has just ridden his mountain bike over 2,000 km across Ontario from Kenora on the Manitoba border (Departure: September 10, 2009) to Niagara-on-the-Lake (Arrival: October 3, 2009).  His objective was to raise awareness and funds for Wells of Hope (www.wellsofhope.com). Wells of Hope has successfully drilled many deep-water wells in Guatemala. However, drilling projects are currently at a standstill, because the drilling rig that was in use is worn out, obsolete, and no longer functional. A modern, versatile and robust drilling rig is still required in order to continue to ...
