Over the past several months, one of my wildest baseball dreams has been realized. Having not been blessed with an overabundance of skill on the baseball field, it is beyond my greatest expectations that I would ever have the chance to rub elbows with one of the chosen ones who has been blessed with extraordinary baseball skills. As surreal as it seems to me, Cleveland Indians pitcher, Jason Grilli and I became buddies last November through our work with the award winning children's baseball book, A Glove of Their Own .  We have since become good friends over the six or so ...
The Beginning It all started the morning of "the crash." Tiger Woods mysteriously crashed his Escalade outside his home around 4 a.m. With reports of a serious injury, the sports world was concerned they had all the lost the world's biggest sports icon. Woods was a model person, someone that you would look up to. An individual that every company would want as a spokesman. An individual who had more money than I would know what to do with. A man who has his name in the biggest brands in the world—NIKE, Gatorade, and AT&T. Then "the crash" happened, and the world got a sneak peek ...
Some say that a man is known by the company he keeps. Nnamdi Asomugha has been known to be in the company of great men in America and in Nigeria. He seems to be using those contacts to help students and others. He is seen as a man who cares for people. So much bad press is given to stars and professional athletes that it just makes sense to focus on those who care about students and people in general. Asomugha has a first name which is the same as one of the names of the airport in Abuja, Nigeria. How do ...

Tiger Woods: Return at the Masters is the Right Thing

By Mike Lieberman On March - 16 - 2010
Author's Note: This article was written Monday night, hours before Tiger made it known that he would in fact make the Masters his first event of the season. The piece is an argument as to why he MAY choose to do so, and not an explanation as to why he DID. Thank you for reading. Ever since Tiger Woods announced his indefinite leave from golf on Dece. 11, the single biggest question hanging over him and all of golf has been: When will Tiger return? If Tiger is bold, confident, and savvy, there’s only one answer to this question: The Masters. Before I ...

10 Famous Coaches and the Actors Who Should Play Them

By Todd Kaufmann On March - 15 - 2010
We've all seen our fair share of our favorite sports movies of all time. Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Miracle, The Rookie, Remember the Titans, For the Love of the Game, the list goes on and on. But how many movies haven't been made? How many times have we watched our favorite sport and wondered if that person will ever be featured in a movie or their story be told. In the next 15 slides, we'll take a look at those famous coaches that are yet to have their live or career portrayed in a movie and the actors that ...
It seems like just yesterday we were gearing up for the 2009 season, but now we’re five weeks away from embarking on the 2010 NFL Draft.  For the first time, the draft will be a three-day event, making the gut-wrenching anticipation a prolong event, that will gather more interest from its national spectators. There are always plain and dull mock drafts available, but this is the first presented in a series with the needs of every franchise in comparison to the usual and a few unusual meal types you may find in your lunch menu.   1. St. Louis—Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska The Lambs in St. ...

Tiger Woods, a Man Can Change

By Damali Binta Yael On March - 13 - 2010
There is a passage that says "We all fall short of the glory of God." Now is the time for all of those who may fall short by their self-righteousness to rethink their position in a lineup ranking who is the most righteous? I asked a young man, "How do you define righteousness?" I refused to define it for him. In fact, every man or woman has to seek out the definitions for themselves. We all build our belief systems. What is righteous to some men and women is what aligns itself with a chosen belief system. Tiger Woods has to seek out those definitions of "right ...
Lines of demarcation exist in sports and in life to distinguish things like fair/foul, legal/illegal and more.  Baseball has its foul line, football has the goal posts, and society has determined that there is something magical about a person's 18th birthday. Basketball, I recently discovered thanks to the Lions of Yates High School in Houston, has a very unique line of demarcation that might surprise you. Yates High School is the No. 1 nationally ranked High School basketball program according to USA Today. They are a powerhouse team led by Coach Greg Wise.  Please understand, when I say powerhouse, I ...

The 12 Greatest True Nicknames in Major League Baseball (1985-2010)

By Chad Waylon Pouncy On March - 13 - 2010
Major League Baseball has a rich history of nicknames, but not all nicknames are created equally. The league is currently flooded with lazy, uninspired nicknames that are, more accurately, abbreviations that hold no real meaning. Some, for instance A-Rod (Alex Rodriguez) and Arm-Ram (Aramis Ramirez) are better left without meaning. Both monikers are better suited to something you would find in the adult section of the video store. Other nicknames are stretches or just sound ridiculous. Jimmy "J-Roll" Rollins comes to mind. To set some basic ground rules, this list is limited to players that have adopted their nicknames as ...
