Has the NFL Become the New Thug League?

By Kendrick Marshall On April - 18 - 2010
Ben Roethlisberger has confirmed what the National Football League and mainstream America does not want to come to grips with. That pro football league has fondled, shot, gambled, and dime-bagged its way to the undisputed title of Thug League champion that was once held by the National Basketball Association. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should be ecstatic that his league has accomplished this feat without much fanfare. There were no talk show radio hosts imploring Sheriff Goodell suspend habeas corpus for athletes who run afoul of the law. Few sports writers or television analysts have demanded ...
In regards to Saturday night's Strikeforce Nashville post-fight melee, involving newly crowned middleweight champion Jake Shields, my thoughts are that Jason "Mayhem" Miller should be the one with the most explaining to do. Shields was enveloped in giving his acceptance speech, and much the same way musician Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift during a certain award show ceremony, Miller rudely interrupted him, asking for a rematch. Consequently, Shields' fellow victorious Gracie Gym member, Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, came to his friend's defense by stepping up to Miller and pushing him backward. That, in turn, led to another Strikeforce champ, Nick Diaz, ...
On a wet day at the Michael Johnson Classic hosted by the Baylor Bears, the Texas A&M men's and women's track and field teams produced six victories before heavy rains ended the remainder of the meet. Morning showers and a breezy day greeted the field of 25 teams to the Hart/Patterson Track and Field Complex. Another downpour arrived 20 minutes prior to the start of the 5 p.m. evening session finals. Then intermittent showers, which provided a couple more downpours midway through the final session, fell for the remainder of the meet. Earning Texas A&M’s first win in one of ...

Fabrice Lapierre Wins Australian Long Jump Title

By Robert Kelly On April - 18 - 2010
In winning his third Australian national long jump title this weekend, Texas A&M graduate Fabrice Lapierre flew to an amazing distance of 28 feet, 9.75 inches (8.78), aided by a 3.1 wind, in the final round of the national meet that served as the Commonwealth Games selection trials for Australia. “It’s always there,” said Lapierre, who was quoted by the press in attendance at the meet, “People don’t understand that one day I’m going to jump something even more exceptional than that. “It’s only a matter of time until I do something crazy and everyone is going to ...

My Dream Job: Keith Gibbs in the Mid 1990s

By Beckley Mason On April - 18 - 2010
I was watching The Air Up There for the 40th time a couple days ago. I fell in love with this movie as a nine-year-old at summer camp. About once a month I’ll make a reference to this movie with my friends and get zero reaction. The plot is as follows: ambitious young Coach Jimmy Dolan, unevenly played by Kevin Bacon, sees a tape of one of his Jesuit college’s missionaries in Africa and spies the next Hakeem Olajuwon dunking in the background. Bacon rushes to Africa to recruit the kid, named Saleh, earns ...

Park Profiles: Salem, Mass.

By Nathaniel Snow On April - 17 - 2010
The Ryan Brennan Memorial Skatepark in Salem, dedicated to my cousin who passed away after a rollerblading accident, is my home park. This wasn’t the first skate park I rolled, but is definitely the one that I roll most often. During my teens, and into my early twenties, I would spend up to eight hours a day here; this is where all the local booters session. It was great to know that if I went to Salem there would always be someone skating there. This park became the starting point for all of our crews sessions, no matter where we were ...

A Sound, Song and Symphony of Freedom: Tribute to Lenora “Doll” Carter

By Damali Ebun Foluke Binta YAEL On April - 17 - 2010
She was older and taller than I am, and so much smarter than many in her circle of contacts. She owned a newspaper. Most of us held a job. Lenora "Doll" Carter is her name. Her life is being celebrated on this weekend, April 17. Her life spans the years when young American journalists sought to have a sound, song and symphony of freedom. Her newspaper told the stories of the Sixties; it chimed the progress of the Seventies and Eighties. Now the Forward Times newspaper shares the musical notes of journalism that make up the symphony of opinions and articles that flow through both the press and the internet. Lenora "Doll" Carter's life ...

Ben Roethlisberger Deserves Suspension? Not a Chance!

By Jonathan Mathis On April - 16 - 2010
The concern surrounding Ben Roethlisberger’s latest episode on sexual assault is misguided and strictly bias. Either an ethical district attorney wants to punish the two-time Super Bowl champ for his stupidity, or an irritable father wants the NFL to suspend Roethlisberger of his accusations that has transpired—not once, but twice—and has raised concern within the Steelers family. Not long ago, charges in the Lake Tahoe case were dismissed when a woman and employee of the resort accused him of sexual assault. His teammates label him as a hero, but the general public has mixed emotions. Within the last month, hands ...

Oakland Raiders QB: What Happened to Eldridge Dickey?

By Damali Ebun Foluke Binta YAEL On April - 16 - 2010
Let's just say that being in the right place, at the right time is a powerful, positive factor in the careers of some people. Have you wondered if factors other than performance helped or hindered the careers of quarterbacks who were the chosen ones of past and present? I wonder. And, when I wonder, I do research. A historian who happens to be the relative of the late Eldridge Dickey, a man who could have been the first Black quarterback in the NFL, has a perspective of Dickey's story that he wants to share. He will be interviewed, April 23, 2010. Some preliminary ...
