Sports Illustrated and CBS News recently released a report on the criminal records of college football players. An unprecedented six-month investigation by George Dohrmann, Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian uncovered damning evidence that appears to validate the suspect nature surrounding college football. After monitoring media-reported crimes by student-athletes over eight months, the three reporters chose to exclusively focus on football because they discovered that football players dominated the majority of cases. The report meticulously focused on the top 25 programs based on the 2010 preseason rankings and involved all 2,837 players, whose names, dates of birth and other vital information ...
With the alleged ghostly spirits that live at the 99-year-old Fenway Park, ghost-seeking fans may have plenty to spook them late in the night. Bumps in the Monster seats may be more scary when the Sox are on the road. According to Baseball Hauntings by Mickey Bradley and Dan Gordon, there is a bit of action at Fenway Park. Among the alleged spirits to be found there on off-nights when the Sox are on road trips are the late announcer Sherm Feller and owner Tom Yawkey.  Wouldn’t Ted Williams be there? Always mercilessly booed by fans at Fenway, might Babe Ruth relocate ...
Just when things seemed to be taking a pivotal turn towards reconciliation between NFL team owners and players concerning Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations, a dreaded fallback occurred. Thursday marked yet another failed attempt between the players union and team owners to reach a solution to dissolve ongoing labor tensions and end the current CBA debacle. After Thursday's meeting, representatives commented on their respective positions. Jeff Pash, the NFL's lead negotiator, seemed to put the onus on the union, "I've said it many times—if both sides have an equal commitment to getting this deal done, it will get done. I don't know if ...
Buffalo Bills safety George Wilson said that NFL players are prepared for a long work stoppage, even one that has them losing paychecks when the season starts.“This day is something we have been talking about for about two years now since the owners opted out of the 2006 CBA,” he said. “Even before they chose to opt out, the owners started to prepare themselves for this day as well. After we saw that they opted out, we had to prepare ourselves for the worst-case scenario and I think we’ve ...

NFL Players Likely To Put Wives to Work During Lockout

By William Russo On March - 12 - 2011
Attention: Ladies! Watch for more shows on TV like “Football Wives” on VH-1. Already players like Leonard Davis, Ryan Neufeld and Mat McBriar are ahead of the curve. Their wives have been stars of a show and bringing home the bacon for their soon-to-be stay-at-home husbands. With a football season likely to be canceled, the option for professional football players is to become housekeepers for their working wives. Many single NFL players will be on the lookout for rich spinsters for a marriage contract during the lockout. Single NFL men are thinking about unionizing before signing with a rich wife. Women with looks and ...
Lucky, the Celtic Leprechaun, remains silent about his pot o’gold and whether it will be available for the St. Patrick's Day celebration next week. Earlier in the week, key Celtics players showed up at an expensive Obama fundraiser in Boston, down the Yellow Brick Road from the Garden, but uptown in price. The cost of meeting President Obama would be daunting to most NBA fans, but not so to Celtics players who brought with them a pot of gold the Celtic leprechaun usually hides. President Barack Obama came to Boston on Tuesday night to praise education efforts in science at a local school, ...
This month is the 49th anniversary of the fight between Emile Griffith and Benny Paret when Kid Paret was beaten to a pulp live on national television by his opponent. He subsequently died. The fight occurred on March 24, 1962. The bout was the third match between Griffith and Paret, each having exchanged the title of Welterweight Champion. The give-and-take had led to ugly feelings when Paret, a Cuban, referred to Emile, a former garment district worker, as a “maricon,” attacking Griffith’s masculinity at a public weigh-in. Sports experts attributed Griffith's growing anger at being disparaged as being at the ...
A wise man once said "Haters want to hate. Lovers want to love. I don't want...none of the above, I want to—"...well, in boxing the haters and the lovers can be seen in their full partisan glory all over the wonderful world wide web. No dispute in the sport has inspired more vitriol, in terms of sheer numbers, than the beef between the factions of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. This is the kind of topic that makes open comment boards seem like a bad idea. On any number of venues, from YouTube videos to boxing columns, the conversation in the comments section typically denigrates ...
The human body is an underrated thing, many people have no idea what they can do until they try it for themselves. The saddest part is, some give up before even trying—U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Sam Tickle is not one of them. The former officer took part in the EAS Ultimate Challenge that required him to complete 30 sports in 30 days throughout 30 cities. Among the activities Sam was required to complete, included rock climbing, swimming, fencing, boxing and rugby—just to name a few. On Wednesday, I got a glimpse into the tour, running through a gauntlet of activities ...

Bleacher Report: Exiled to the Siberia of Sports Pages

By William Russo On March - 9 - 2011
In the sports world of Bleacher Report, few know the loneliness and isolation of being imprisoned in the Gulag of sports writing. Yes, if Stalin had a say, he would send you to the heading: “The Rest.” You may find the heading way over in a corner, after Motorsports, MMA, Mud Wrestling and Chess. Here you will find two categories:  “Sports and Society” and “Humor.” Those wanting fame need not send articles here. Humor is the Black Hole of writing in the sports world. Few fans want to see anything funny about the teams they live and die to watch. Woe to those lowlifes ...
