Baseball: The Common Bond between a Father and Son

By Craig Turner On May - 26 - 2009
As we close in on Father's Day this June, many fathers and sons will be enjoying the day by taking in the grand ole' game of baseball.  A Sunday afternoon of fun in the sun. The smell of hot dogs, popcorn, and roasted peanuts fill the air. A soda or beer to quench your thirst—all while hoping that your day will be made complete with your favorite team winning in dramatic fashion.  As a child, I lost my mother at the age of eight, so my father had to teach me many things on his own.  The one thing that he taught me and which bonded ...
Northern Lebanon is a small AAA high school in the rural village of Fredericksburg in Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, built along Route 22. An out-of-the-way school surrounded on three sides by cornfields, and surrounded on all four sides until only about 10 years ago. Northern Lebanon, or "NL", is your typical high school. School dances and football games are all the rage. There was nothing better than a weekend with a game on Friday and a dance on Saturday. Football games and getting into trouble, that's high school. Unfortunately for this school, the football team had a history of, let's say, sub-par seasons. ...

Memorial Day: A Reflection of Love and Sports

By Neil Powell On May - 25 - 2009
As I grow a little bit older, I've begun to realize what most people my age start to. There are now people in our past that have gone on to a better place and we are left with just the memories of them. Memorial Day can start to really take meaning on all levels of personal importance. I reflect on memories of my grandmothers, aunt, and my grandfather. "Gramps" I called him and he was my main man. I named my son after him and he wears the name proudly.   I'll admit, sports captivate my soul. It's the ultimate and only legitimate "reality" TV there is. Gramps had ...

The Art Of Sport and Music

By Emma On May - 24 - 2009
Sports, art and music; all have much in common. The drum roll of anticipation as the players wait for their moment to shine. The crescendo of the crowd's roar as they enter into the full view of the stadium. In tennis—the accented notes of winners, the articulated finesse of a drop shot, the jarring discordancy of an unforced error. The staccato of an overhead smash. The trill of suspense as the stadium holds its breath, waiting to see if the lob will land within the lines. The ostinato of a basketballer's ball-bounces—rhythmic and constant. The accelerando of a sprinter's feet, moving faster and ...

The current economic crisis is taking no holds barred, especially on schools of higher learning. With numerous colleges and universities making cuts on athletic departments to offset the deficits they face, more and more college teams are experiencing their funerals. Schools like the University of Vermont are hurting so much that they are forced to cut programs, like the Catamounts baseball program that was introduced in the 19th century, that were staples of their universities.  Schools are forced to make these eliminations while following Title IX guidelines, which call for an equal amount of men's and women's sports teams per school. But is ...

A Life or Death Situation: How Far Would Your Rivalry Go?

By Cameon Shiflett On May - 24 - 2009
Every now and then we hear something that makes us stop and think. Every now and then we hear about things that make us realize how thankful we are. But how often do we hear things that make us think how far we would go to help a rival? Every team has a rival no matter how good or bad that rival might be. Alabama's rival is Auburn (or Tennessee or LSU depending on whom you ask), Nebraska's rival is Colorado, and Auburn's rival is Georgia (or Alabama.) Rivalries are said to run deep. They have caused fights. They have caused divorces. They ...
