The damning revelations that came to light this week, courtesy of veteran Scotland winger Rory Lamont, were revealed amidst a flurry of troubling reports concerning player trauma in contact sports; many of which are beginning to cause increasing concern within the global rugby community. Your humble correspondent was also in the middle of conducting in-depth research into player welfare in rugby when Lamont's comments in The Scotsman pierced the tragic silence that seems to cover these issues in the modern game. I told them [medics and coaches] I couldn’t play and was looking at pulling myself out. I had done it once before, ...
Tom Daley fans will be rocking back and forth with anxiety right now. The English heartthrob—who The Daily Star reports was recently voted the World’s Sexiest Man by Attitude readers—has suffered a number of misfortunes since representing Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. As reported by BBC Sport, the 19-year-old initially suffered from a lack of motivation after the worldwide event. Injury problems followed as Daley was forced to miss the European Championships and World Cup after suffering a triceps injury during April 2013. Despite partaking in little competition during the eight months after securing an Olympic bronze medal, the ...
In a truly sad story for the NFL and everyone involved, Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent has decided to retire from football and focus on getting his life together amidst a court case.  ESPN insider Adam Schefter had the news on Brent's decision Thursday via Twitter:  The retirement will allow Brent to focus on personal issues, namely, a trial for intoxication manslaughter. Back in December of 2012 he was driving a car with teammate Jerry Brown in the passenger seat. Brent had a blood-alcohol content that was, allegedly, 0.18, double the legal limit. The situation ended with Brown, a close friend of Brent, dead after a horrific crash. Additionally, he ...
It never fails. Be it every year or every four years, we as Americans, both sports fans and not, decide that for a day, a week or a month we are going to become diehard, knowledgeable fans of sports that we normally couldn't care less about. These marquee events come around and prompt us to pick a team or player and root for them in athletic competitions where most of us have an extremely limited amount of knowledge of the rules governing them. We catch "the fever" if you will, of whatever sport and event it is that the powers that be ...

The wild fixture, in ...

The Impact of Advancing Modern Medicine on the NFL

By Dave Siebert On May - 16 - 2013
Back in the 19th and early 20th centuries, surgeons used chloroform—yes, that chloroform—as a general anesthetic. It was during that time in 1886 when Dr. William Martin published a suspected case of chloroform toxicity in the British Medical Journal. These days, the National Toxicology Program lists chloroform as "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen."Ah, how far we've come. For better or for worse, medical science is in a constant state of flux. For instance, treatments based on tradition and "how it's always been done" mentalities are now giving way to evidence-based decision making. What's more, less-invasive interventions are trumping more-invasive ones while ...
The National Wheelchair Basketball Association holds its 64th annual national championships in Louisville, Kentucky this weekend. Yeah, THAT Louisville, Kentucky—home of the Kentucky Derby, Louisville Slugger and the 2013 NCAA men’s basketball champion University of Louisville Cardinals.  When I received the press release from the Louisville Sports Commission that over 1,000 athletes on 85 teams were coming to the biggest wheelchair basketball tournament ever, my curiosity got the better of me.  I’ve seen nearly every sport imaginable but I had never watched an actual wheelchair basketball game. Sure, I’ve seen video clips of celebrity games and brief bits of actual ...

Boston Marathon Bombing: Horrific Tragedy on Multiple Levels

By Seph Anderson On April - 16 - 2013
The Boston Marathon bombing on April 15 was a human tragedy of immeasurable sadness. However, what's even more tragic is the specific group which the responsible party targeted: marathon runners (and their families) that had committed endless time, finances and energies to prepare for one of the world's most respected sporting events in the Boston Marathon. All acts of terror at home and abroad are extremely horrific, but the attacks at the 2013 Boston Marathon stand out as incredibly disheartening. While there's always a select group of marathoners competing to actually win the race, the overwhelming majority of entrants are simply running ...

U.S. Soccer fans have known Landon Donovan since he broke onto the international scene by winning the Golden Ball award in the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship. We’ve known Landon through his early trials and tribulations in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen. We groaned when he was loaned back to the nascent MLS league to play for the San Jose Earthquakes. Jeers turned to cheers when he led the Earthquakes to two MLS Cups. Confused and bemused we wondered how our best player could spurn the prestige of the European stage to slum for the LA Galaxy.  He made up ...
