Folks used to say, "There is more than one way to skin a cat." Nowadays, the SPCA would condemn someone for saying that, especially if he is a professional athlete.
Animal cruelty, they would chant while they carry their homemade banners with red paint sprayed on them, saying, "Down with the cat-skinners!"
The meaning of the old saying is intended to tell us that the road to success can take on many different paths. Success can be preceded by losing a few battles. It does not mean, however, that the war will be lost.
I take time to read B/R articles on my breaks. ...
I was reading an article earlier today that mentioned John Kruk. What a corporate shill he has become. May as well put Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse ears on his head. I'm ashamed he's a fellow West Virginian. Call me the John Kruk Dixie Chick.
He used to be cool. Many of you are familiar with this story. I've heard two different versions.
The original, and more believable, was that a lady was with her kids and saw Kruk walking through a stadium corridor, in uniform, smoking a cigarette.
She said something like, "I can't believe a professional athlete is smoking!"
Kruk's response, "Lady, ...
So we think our sports articles (and analysis) are perfect. Let’s look at some possible ways of introducing misconceptions or error into a sports report.
From a broader perspective, we are always attempting to approach a perfect model, an improved description of a situation in sports, and in life.
The idea is to remember that all things are subject to adjustments, iterations, improvement, with the hope that a convergence to excellence and near perfection will occur.
In math, when we talk about a limit concept, we realize that the “approaching behavior” is what is important. A function may not actually reach a limit, but it ...
This will be her first and last interview on the story.
But who really wanted to hear it?
To me, it seems so long ago that Erin Andrews was in the news. She’s been on vacation from ESPN since the video of someone peeping in on her in her hotel room was posted online. It’s been about two months since it first came out.
Andrews has been an afterthought in a summer filled with sports stories. But she doesn’t want to kill the story.
Corresponding with her return to the sidelines, the show has already been taped and will be aired on the Sept. ...
Every day at 4 p.m. ET, ESPN2 broadcasts its SportsNation show, in which the biggest issues around the sports world are discussed among the two hosts, Colin Cowherd and Michelle Beadle.
One segment of the show is titled "Fanish or Foolish?"; in it, Cowherd and Beadle debate whether an action was either something that an average fan would do or something that was completely uncalled-for and foolish.
With all the drama in NASCAR, the fans are never ones to sit back and let things happen. NASCAR fans make sure they are heard and they are heard as loud as they can be.
Which means ...
Sports fever is in the air. Football, baseball, basketball, and hockey seasons are soon to converge, and that makes for sports fan heaven. Add to that the great tournaments in tennis and golf that are beginning or just on the horizon, the final races of the NASCAR Winston Cup season, and what more could a sports aficionado want?
Oh, and let’s not forget all the other great sports such as Soccer, Boxing, MMA, and all college sports. Simply put, we’re coming up on the best time of the year to be a sports fan.
We’re quickly closing in on the start of ...
Any U.S. white kid who went through puberty during the 1980s and is not familiar with the work of the recently deceased film director John Hughes is either Amish, has a brain more than a tad addled by booze and/or drugs, or is currently in a coma.
"Yeah, but the thing is, I'm kinda like the leader. Kinda like the king of the dipsh*ts."
Over one-quarter of their remaining 32 games, the Cincinnati Reds play the Pittsburgh Pirates.
That quote from Anthony Michael Hall's character in Hughes' cinematic masterpiece, Sixteen Candles, is relevant to the race for the cellar of the NL Central.
With ...
This is my first blog post to be republished on Bleacher Report.
Hi! I’m going to bring some quirks to my writing, which I hope to (re-) introduce you to over the next few days and weeks. I just relaunched my Web site, MorganWick.com, where I talk about a wide variety of topics, including some you might never have heard about, and even the topics that are familiar I often talk about from a unique perspective, because I’m constantly thinking about them.
On my site, the motto is “Ideas every day”, and to celebrate the launch of the new site, this is ...
It was bound to happen. It was written. This year would be the year that Taiwan (or Chinese Taipei for all you whippersnappers sympathetic to the mainland) would see its streak against Californian teams in the Little League World Series broken.
Park View Little League, flying the flag for the proud San Diego suburb of Chula Vista and the Golden State, broke away in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to defeat Taoyuan City, 6-3, on Sunday at Howard J. Lamade Stadium in Williamsport, Pa.
The big bats of Taoyuan caused frustration for starting pitcher Isaiah Armenta, who gave up ...
