Local Event Sports Association

Here’s an AP article today which points out that of the 269 players on the eight teams playing in the College World Series this year, only eight are African American.  While I am not surprised that fewer African Americans are playing the sport than 30 years ago, the specific numbers above are shocking. It’s no secret that young black athletes have lost interest in baseball in favor of basketball and football.  In the spring of 1996, I had a roommate who was teaching and coaching baseball at Galileo High School in San Francisco.  That’s the high school that Joe ...
The fruit of the labor of the Oakland Raiders would be to win the championship in the AFC, and to win another Super Bowl. Sometimes it is helpful to connect the behaviors in one area to those of another. Tennis Mantis, a 19-year-old college student, who listens to the little gems of wisdom that just might inspire the Oakland Raiders, has something to say. Let's just say that out of the mouths of babes can come great wisdom and simplicity. As I demonstrate the power of preparation and of doing your homework, sometimes college students get the message and present me with a ...

Yes, skirmishes between adults do occur at prestigious events like the World Cup. However, ever hear of a fist fight breaking out at a youth sporting event? Well, that is exactly what happened this past weekend at a girls youth soccer game. When parental emotions run high during competitive events involving their own kids, volatile situations can result—especially when a situation occurs where one parent sees unfair play that he or she feels puts his or her own child at risk. Now I don't want to add too much of my own flavor to this since it is such a hot topic ...
It is every young boy’s dream to become a professional athlete when he gets older. For me, it was baseball. Baseball wasn’t merely a game or a sport that I idolized — it was a lifestyle and passion. My every thought, action, and breath involved the innocent bliss that baseball offered. I loved the sound of the bat connecting with the ball, the smell of the freshly cut grass, and the feel of lathering up a new baseball and getting ready to throw a pitch. Baseball was my paradise, my escape, and the foundation of my biggest dreams. At my elementary school graduation, we ...
Texas A&M's Ashika Charan established a career best of 44 feet, 4 inches (13.51 meters) to place fifth in the U.S. Championships on Thursday at Drake Stadium. Charan bettered her previous best of 43-11.25 on a pair of jumps. The mark of 44-4 also becomes the American collegiate leader for the 2010 season. Charan is the No. 3 performer on the Aggie all-time list with the No. 5 performance. Only Yasmine Regis and Detrich Clariett have marks better than Charan at Texas A&M. She stated after her performance to a group of reporters in the mixed zone, “There were ...
