Chapter 1 As a result of the Protestant attacks on Bombay Street, which the IRA failed to stop, a group of Nothern IRA members formed the provisional IRA, which split from the Marxist leadership in Dublin, who became known as the official IRA.   Brendan Hughes’ mother died when he was very young. His father raised him and five siblings. His paternal grandparents were well-off and had a house on a Protestant street. Growing up, Hughes was able to gain acceptance among some Protestant kids, but was still discriminated against by his Protestant neighbors constantly. Crazy old Mrs. McKissick spit ...
This is the last weekend to bet four NFL games before we hit the conference championships and narrow it down to two. While it’s not a full slate of action, there are some great bets to be made on these four games. Let’s take a look at the lock of the week and another more solid wager.  Lock: New England Patriots (-13.5) vs. Denver Broncos There is no way the Patriots lose this, and there is no way that they even let the Broncos within two touchdowns of their final score. When these teams played back in Week 15, the final ...
The Super Bowl XLVI futures market has been very active over the past three days, and some serious action has landed squarely on the higher-priced underdogs.Cantor Gaming of Las Vegas sent out the Denver Broncos at betting odds of 60/1 after their 29-23 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Steelers as 7.5-point home underdogs, but that number has been sliced in half.Let's take a closer look at the divisional round from a betting perspective.Begin Slideshow

Best Sports Movies of All Time

Sure to incite a good debate, I humbly submit my list of the best sports movies of all time. That’s right, of all time!It would seem apropos to put this out there this time of year when the major cinematic award shows loom on the calendar and the country’s cultural horizon. In fact, a sports movie has found its way into the awards talk buzz once again. It was only two years ago that audiences were captivated by the true story of Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Michael Oher in The Blind Side, and Sandra Bullock deservedly won the best actress Oscar ...
The USC Trojans watched the Southeastern Conference win its sixth consecutive BCS National Championship Game while finishing out their probationary period, but the Pac-12 program will potentially get a chance to snap the streak during the 2012-13 college football season.Oddsmakers have established the Trojans and Oklahoma Sooners as the third choice in the betting odds to win the 2013 BCS National Championship Game, sitting just behind the two teams that played in New Orleans Monday night.Let's take a closer look at 15 teams in the futures market that have the best chance of winning it all in Miami on Jan. ...
Officiating requires several attributes: an ability to be impartial, fair, knowledgeable and sensible. It also requires a thick skin, putting up with rough conditions and the difficult sacrifice of being away from home, family and friends during evenings, weekends and—in Major League Baseball—full weeks or months at a time.  Not all people can be officials, but all officials must be people.  The NFL recently announced referee Tony Corrente—who recently worked the New Orleans Saints vs. Detroit Lions wild-card playoff game—will conclude his season early instead of continuing further into the playoffs.  Corrente is taking a leave of absence to continue ...
Here I go again. I did a little research. Here is what I discovered, and it may be relevant.Hypothetically, if Reggie McKenzie had been hired as GM with the Green Bay Packers in 2006, would he have fired Mike McCarthy? McKenzie did work for the Packers from 1994 to 2012, but he probably did not have the power to fire McCarthy in 2006.The reason I asked this question is because McCarthy had an 8-8 record at the end of his first year as head coach for the Packers. Note that 2006 was the first year McCarthy was head coach. Somehow, ...
From an attendance standpoint, there’s no reason for the Utah Jazz to leave Salt Lake City. Through the end of the 2010-11 season, the Jazz ranked seventh  in NBA home attendance, averaging 18,421 per game. The 2011-12 season is off to an 18,980 average through four home games, ranking the team sixth  in the league. That’s about a three percent increase over last season. Attendance, however, is but one factor which dictates where a sports franchise decides to call home. From a revenue standpoint, however, the Jazz leaving Utah may be an eventuality. These types of things happen when a ...
The Alabama Crimson Tide (11-1) and LSU Tigers (13-0) are set to play a Southeastern Conference rematch in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game, and almost every large wager in Las Vegas is expecting Nick Saban to gain revenge. In speaking with nearly every major sports book manager on and off the strip Sunday, over 60 percent of the straight-bet wagering is landing on the underdog Tigers, but the type of money that moves a line of this magnitude has landed squarely on the Crimson Tide.Alabama opened as one-point neutral-site underdogs on Dec. 4, with that number rising to as high ...
