The Great Green Casino: Golf’s Greatest Betting Games
On January - 20 - 2011
Gambling and golf go together like nachos and salsa. That’s to say they get along real well. A little golf wager can add some paprika to your putts, szechwan to your swing and quench that competitive fire that burns deep inside every duffer’s soul. You’re probably familiar with “buck-a-hole,” and while this pedestrian skins game can be a lot fun, the George Washington per cup racket is the mah-jong of golf betting games.Crank up the action in your golf game with these fairway zingers.Begin ...
Chris Shivers: A Classic Interview with the Pro Bull Riding Legend
On June - 17 - 2009
Who are the millennial cowboys? They drive pickups, not herds, they get buzzed on Jim Beam and they ride 1300 lb. bulls with names like Locomotive Breath, Hurts So Good, and Freak on a Leash.
"Yeah, I'm a cowboy," drawls Chris Shivers, real slow like.
When Shivers says he's a cowboy, he's not talking about Kid Rock. He has been gored—he's had his collarbone snapped in two, wishbone-style—and he's been trampled flat into he ground more times than Wyle E. Coyote.
No matter how twisted up his body gets, Shivers takes his lumps like Gumby in a ten-gallon hat—he never gets bent out ...
Tee time, any time, all the time.
As sweet a notion this is to legions of certified golf-a-holics craving a midnight fairway fix, in the pre-digital cable days of the mid-90s, just the idea of a 24/7 single-sport network (nevermind one solely dedicated to golf), was hard for people to get their heads around. So when The Golf Channel first landed on the dial it was no hole in one. It was more like a shanked drive that careened into the unsuspecting windshield of a beemer in the parking lot.
GOLF was the first niche sports channel, the blueprint for SPEED, OLN, ...

When Athletes Check the Mic (The Classics Edition)
On May - 26 - 2009
Cassius Clay released I am the Greatest on Columbia records in 1963. Billed as a comedy album, the record features the future Muhammad Ali rumbling his way through bluster heavy proto-rap, poetic verses, fight music, standup monologues and even Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me,” all to the delight of a live audience who cheer, chuckle and ballyhoo behind Clay’s boisterous horn tooting. Apparently, Ali opened Pandora’s box set. Athletes of all stripes have since felt the need to rock the casbah—I've stacked up a six pack of questionable releases that managed to find their way out of the locker ...

Is Canada Still A Bronze Medal Nation?
On May - 26 - 2009
"And Jacques Jock finishes a respectable eighth place … a valiant effort and Jock's time is a new personal best. He's got to be pleased about this!" a CBC sportscaster exclaims.
We hear this time and time again during the Olympics. The celebration of mediocre results is as Canadian as beaver pelts.
Canucks have a longstanding reputation for pulling off gutsy performances that fall just short of the real glory. Unfortunately the reputation is deserved. While Barrick and Goldcorp mine tons of the precious metal, Canada's top athletes seem predisposed toward the lower steps on the podium.
