What Has the NFL Turned Into the Past Few Years?

By Lars Hanson On October - 30 - 2009
The media icon that is the NFL, seems to go from a league with players playing to win and get to the Super Bowl, to a league that's been loaded with player conduct problems, divas, and players just in it for the money. On August.8, 2006, Roger Goodell was selected to succeed retiring commissioner Paul Tagliabue, voted on by 31 NFL GMs (Oakland abstained from all voting). Goodell officially became the acting commissioner on September 1st. From the moment Goodell was named the commissioner, he has been severely cracking down on off and on the field player conduct/behavior. In mid-2007, the off-field actions of NFL players Adam ...

It’s almost Halloween but for some teams every day is Halloween because for some teams scary happens whenever they put on a uniform. You know the type of uniform that I’m talking about, right?  The type that makes you change the channel if you have a regular television or scratch your eyes out if you have an HD set?  Yep.  That type of uniform. Well, here’s the list of the Top 10 Worst Uniforms in Sports today.  Anybody can go back and check out the Denver Nuggets skyline atrocity of the 1980’s, but finding the worst ...
When the No. 1 rapper in the world raps about Manny Pacquiao on his latest album, that really makes a statement on how big Manny has become worldwide as a certified boxing star. Yes, rapper Jay-Z, who is also a hip-hop mogul and businessman, who holds the record for most No. 1 albums by a solo artist of all time, even knocking out the "King," Elvis Presley, can rap about whatever the hell he wants to rap about. Jay-Z raps about everything from boasting about his new proud president (Barack Obama) to even bragging about watching Manny Pacquiao fight in Las Vegas and ...
When you're a coach of a team, regardless of what sport, one of the most important things to impart on an athlete is the sense of being disciplined and when you mess up, take accountability for your actions. I think what's important is to define accountability:that is regardless of what actions you take, to take responsibility for your actions, and not to place blame on someone else or use an excuse. Being accountable doesn't necessarily mean it has to be in a negative context, either. I would believe that if you do something well and you're recognized for it, then take responsibility ...

A Sort of Homecoming: An Autumn Tradition of Americana

By Jo-Ryan Salazar On October - 29 - 2009
(Photo courtesy of Lucio Arellano, LakewoodFootball.com ) 5:00 a.m., Tuesday morning. I never really get up this early to do something that happens once in a year. Actually, this would be the first time in eight years that I would do this on my own terms. After a quick snack of cinnamon raisin bagels and Tang, I race-walked to the bus stop at the corner of 25th St. and Santa Fe Avenue to catch the first bus heading eastbound. I was amazed at how fast my legs went. They knew that I was an alumnus on a mission. From ...

The 10 Rules a Real Fan Must Follow

By Will Holt On October - 27 - 2009
I am a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan. That sentence alone should explain a lot. You don't need to ask me who my favorite teams are. It is all self-explanatory. Unfortunately I live amongst frauds. There are actually fans that were born and raised in either Philadelphia or its suburbs and they somehow support both the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees. They try to justify it and say, "My dad was a lifelong Yankee fan so I always kind of liked the Yankees." Or you will get this line a lot, "I need to have an American League team to root for." Oh really? Is what ...

When Sports Takes a Back Seat to Life

By Todd Kaufmann On October - 27 - 2009
I've learned a hard lesson over the last few days, a lesson that I should always have in my mind. Unfortunately, it took a tragedy to remind me what's really important in life. So often we turn to sports to get away from whatever is going on in our lives, but there are also times where we hold sports as something more important than those around us. We watch college games, we watch pro games, taking up most of our weekends sitting in front of the television rooting on our favorite team. Most of the time, we have our closest friends around us ...

Triumph and Tragedy: Where Heroes Are Forged

By Rojo Grande On October - 27 - 2009
I walked through the beautiful campus of my former high school the other day. One cannot traverse that sacred ground without reflecting on the rich history of academics and sports Grants Pass High School has been blessed with. Yes, the structures where I once studied, mingled, and competed during the 1960s are long gone but the legendary names still live on in modern venues: Russ Werner Track Complex, Mel Ingram Field, Heater-Newman Gym. Side-by-side in the upper levels of Heater-Newman Memorial Gymnasium, among the literal tons of championship hardware, sits an odd perplexity: two first-place trophies from the 1948 Oregon Class A ...
