Update: Suspended Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach—who filed a request for a temporary injunction in the 99th District Court of Lubbock County stating, in part, that he had not been afforded any process whatsoever to answer alleged charges—has been fired according to AP reports from the courtroom.  Moreover, through his attorney, Ted Liggett—of Smith and Liggett—Leach made it clear that he had not been officially made aware of what rules he allegedly violated. Included in his petition was a copy of the three-sentence notice of his suspension from the administration, which simply states that an allegation has been made by a student and ...
There may be some questions surrounding when the votes go in, if the vote was closer than it should have been and perhaps if the order for the runner ups was correct. I don’t think, however, that there should be any question about this year’s Heisman Winner, Mark Ingram. Ingram—the third straight sophomore to win the award after the first 72 awards excluding any underclassmen—was Nick Saban’s most dependable weapon and carried the Tides offense at time through the season. His stats are not the most prolific ever and perhaps not even the best across the board this year but when ...
Part I   Maybe it’s not considered politically correct for a southern white guy to bring up plantations and slavery, as it was indeed the darkest period in this country’s history, but if you think about it, that’s exactly the right way to describe how the NCAA and BCS system determines its college football champion.   The BCS is designed to promote the rich (traditional football power conferences) and keep the poor man (mid-major conferences) down.  There really is no other way to look at it, and this year is the perfect example.   This may be a year the BCS gets it right (in terms ...

Southern Fried Playoff: How to Make CFB Better than Ever!

By Henry Ball On December - 7 - 2009
This is essentially Part II of this Article. The Southern Fried Playoff (SFPO) is a simple 16-Team single-elimination tournament that would integrate some of the existing bowl venues while allowing the other bowls to thrive and prosper. SFPO qualification is simple. Win your conference and you are in, period. Each conference can determine a champion as they see fit, with a championship game of divisional winners or a round robin with tie breakers, leave it up to each conference. ND and the other independents might want to join a conference but they don’t have to. In addition to the conference champions, ...
In the recently released movie "The Blind Side" about former Ole Miss left tackle Michael Oher, his guardian explains to him that “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” Lord Alfred Tennyson's classic poem is in reality about the Rebels' rivalry game against LSU, now known as the Magnolia Bowl.   The guardian explains that the cavalry, in a display of courage and unity, charges into a heavily fortified valley at the behest of their flawed but courageous and patriotic leader.   Oher then writes an essay relating this story to his own life and wins over a skeptical teacher who was the final obstacle in ...

Meyer To Remain In Florida: Where Does Notre Dame Turn Now?

By Henry Ball On November - 23 - 2009
ESPN is reporting that Urban Meyer will remain at Florida, in his own words, "for as long as they will have me!" The announcement coming after rampant speculation that Meyer would be the primary target for Jack Swarbrick, Notre Damn's Athletic Director, who is expected to terminate current head coach Charlie Weis at the end of this season. Swarbrick has not publicly acknowledged that Weis will be fired, only that "the football program will be evaluated at the end of the season." If the evaluation includes a review of the expectations set by Charlie Weis himself, who said theat he was not hired to go ...
If you believe some of the sentiment found on blogs such as ‘And the Valley Shook’ as well as other Internet outlets, including the new Facebook feature allowing comments on LSU’s official website, LSU Sports, the Tigers’ most successful coach—by winning percentage anyway—could find his tenure defined by one single second on the clock.   Coach Les Miles has never won over all LSU fans—for some it’s that he’s not his predecessor (Nick Saban), while for others it’s that he never will be—despite having as much, if not more, success as Saban, or any coach in school history for that matter; comparatively.   Yet, ...
