I have long believed something about international sports.    International sports are the only thing for foreign athletes to truly channel how they think and feel about the United States, and thus international sports serve as a "barometer" for what the world thinks about America.   When the United States goes deep in the World Cup for instance, they still want to win but they don't resent us as much, hence the United States outcome in the 2002 World Cup after the events of September 11, 2001.
