Tim Wakefield: Still Stuck on No. 199 After Four Tries

When the Chicago White Sox cast him out at the end of the 1962 season, Early Wynn had 299 victories in his career. He had multiple seasons in which he won 20 games for Cleveland.

Like Wynn, Tim Wakefield is stuck. Nothing gold can stay. It’s been the hardest hue for him. He has 199 wins and desperately wants to win 200. The Red Sox, unlike the White Sox, will give him many opportunities to have his milestone.

For Early Wynn, the losing continued even after the generosity of the Cleveland Indians came out of nowhere to bring him back in June of 1963. 

He was fat and out of shape. It seemed an impossible task to win one more game and reach his goal of 300. He had failed three times with Chicago, and Wynn would lose five more times. It took eight attempts to win the big one.
