U.S. Open 2010: Fan Brawl Halting Match Is Tennis’ Biggest Headline

Things are bad when the biggest headline coming out of Arthur Ashe Stadium is a fight in the stands between a man and woman.

The pair began arguing during the Novak Djokovic and Philipp Petzschner match Thursday night. Slapping took place. So did cursing. 

While the U.S. Open remains the most energetic (and vocal) of the Grand Slams, this went way beyond its code of behavior at a tennis match. 

Citizen journalism at its best can be found on YouTube. Almost all Google search results detail the fight rather than the match's result. (Djokovic won 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 if one was wondering.)

Except for this incident, the U.S. Open has been rather uneventful through five days. 

Maybe the NFL should take some blame with preseason games concluding this weekend. The regular season kicks off Thursday night between the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints in a rematch of the NFC Championship game.

Or could it be college football's return that draws passionate fans to ESPN and tailgates ...
