Michael Vick Isn’t Every Man’s Best Friend

By Kimberley Nash On September - 30 - 2009
Michael Vick killed dogs. Michael Vick tortured and killed dogs. Michael Vick endorsed the torture and killing of dogs. Michael Vick is a despicable human being for having done all of the above...Period.Today, Nike showed that character means nothing where the business model is concerned by resigning him to an endorsement deal. It is for this reason that there is new uproar over the Eagles quarterback and his right to prosper post-incarceration.Here's the issue that most who support Vick's right to return to the NFL don't seem to understand: Not everyone embraces or believes that Vick is worthy of a ...

Moon Over Bobble Heads, There’s a New Gnome in Town

By mark murrell On September - 29 - 2009
Face painting, foam hands, decorated vehicles, flags, jerseys; diehard Sports fans consistently seek for creative ways to flaunt their team pride. I am sure we have seen it all…or have we? Yesterday, during the NY Jets game, fans were dawning sombreros in honor of their star rookie quarterback, Mark Sanchez. Seriously? Sombreros? This solidified my hypothesis that fans will go to the ends of the earth to show their support, but more importantly, find unique ways to display it. For these diehard fans dedication to their team does not wane when the game is ...

Death At The Track, Through the Eyes Of a NASCAR Fan

By Sal Sigala Jr. On September - 29 - 2009
Margaret Cowherd jumped up as soon as she saw the doctor come out of the emergency room. She asked the doctor with a look of sadness in her eyes, "How is my husband? Is he going to be all right? When can I see him?" The doctor responded, "I’m sorry. We did all we could, but your husband didn’t make it." Margaret looked to the heavens and asked, "Why do race car drivers have to die? Doesn’t God care about the sport anymore? Where were you, God, when my husband needed you?" The doctor asked, "Would you like some time alone with your ...

Adventures With a Very Popular Mascot

By Alex Shultz On September - 28 - 2009
Portions of this article previously appeared on www.vype.com.dfw On Saturday, I volunteered at a sports expo to earn community services hours for NHS (a club at my high school). Basically, the expo was a bunch of sports groups encouraging kids (and some adults) to be active and join different organizations. I saw the SMU football and basketball teams, various volleyball squads, a cheerleading group that took themselves far too seriously (I shall not name them), and the gymnastics group who trained gold-medal winner Nastia Lukin. The girls that performed from that group were 11 years old, some younger, and they were doing stunts ...

NEWS: President Obama To Support Chicago In Copenhagen

By TAB BAMFORD On September - 28 - 2009
Reports out of both Washington and Chicago on Monday are saying that President Barack Obama will travel to Copenhagen to support Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Obama, a native of Chicago's south side, had said for some time that his wife, Michelle, would represent the White House at the events this week. But apparently something changed this weekend, and now the President will join his wife, and Oprah, in Copenhagen.  Read more Sports & Society news on BleacherReport.com

A Tribute To Bob Carroll, a Superb NFL Historian

By Damali Binta Yael On September - 27 - 2009
I heard his voice one time over the cellphone. He was busy, but he was willing to talk to me. I joined the Professional Football Researchers Association (PFRA) and I wanted sample copies of the newsletters. The day I called the PFRA editor, Bob Carroll,  his secretary was not in the office. He was an expert in the history of the National Football League (NFL). A few days later I received the newsletters. I only knew Bob Carroll through the Internet and email communications. However when I visited Canton, Ohio I told Jerry Csaki, the HOF education director, how Bob helped me write ...

Former HS Football Player on Blowouts: What’s the Big Deal?

By Josh McMullen On September - 27 - 2009
A Florida high school defeats another 83-0. An Arizona quarterback throws for a record nine touchdowns in a 67-0 blowout victory where even the second and third strings played most of the second half. A coach in Connecticut could possibly be suspended for winning 56-0. What do they all have in common? They are all being accused of being unsportsmanlike. I’m sorry if I sound old-fashioned, but this is absolutely ridiculous, and this is coming from a former player that’s been on both sides of a blowout. Let me start with the winning sides first. In all three cases, backup players were used, even dipping into the third ...

Victoria Seals President Named Executive of the Year

By Devon Teeple On September - 26 - 2009
The Victoria Seals first season in the Golden Baseball League did not end with a championship, but does have one of the brightest minds in the game. The GBL announced on Thursday that team President Darren Parker was named Executive of the Year. Parker was awarded this in large part to the success he has had bringing a franchise to a location that has not had professional baseball in 25 years. “It is very difficult to launch an expansion professional sports team in any sport and any location,” said GBL Commissioner Kevin Outcalt. “And it is extraordinary what Darren has accomplished in Victoria ...

Craig Heyward: A Man Called “Ironhead”

By Blaine Spence On September - 26 - 2009
Writer’s Note: Craig Heyward would have been 43 on Sept. 26, 2009. The name “Ironhead” Heyward used to invoke fear into the hearts of NFL defenders. Hell, Heyward used to invoke fear into the hearts of anyone who crossed his path, or him. This is how Len Pasquarelli from ESPN.com described Heyward: “He was one of the toughest, nastiest SOBs that I have encountered in 28 years of covering the NFL, a man whose menacing scowl could seemingly strip paint from a wall, and who reveled in his own brute physicality and took glee from imposing his strength on others.” But is that really ...
