Oakland Raiders: The Pain Of Progress (Part One)

By Damali Binta Yael On April - 30 - 2010
Part One Did Al Davis give in to pressure when he drafted Eldridge Dickey back in the day, and did he make history by doing so? A historian seems to believe that the peer pressure and social pressure of having an African-American quarterback was too much for the Oakland Raiders' fans to handle in the Sixties. Could that same covert pressure be present in both the fans and media as it relates to JaMarcus Russell? T.J., a biology major and former football player, says: "When you are a first round draft choice, there are a lot of expectations on you to turn a losing team ...
Some fans can not be satisfied by a nice, simple fight song. It's a fad that is picking up steam. Up until now, tribute songs have been thrown together mostly by fans looking for a quick YouTube flash of fame. But over the last year, the production value and brand name taking on the genre has amped up mightily. First, Prince jumped into the fray. Then Creed crooner Scott Stapp couldn't contain his love for the Marlins. And now, Freekbass has bestowed his musical powers upon the world in a catchy new ditty, "We Are ND". Since we can't get these gems ...

By Mike McD On April - 30 - 2010
We've seen time and time again that some of the most beautiful women in the world can be athletes. “When you mail Ichiro something from the States, you only have to use that name on the address and he gets it [in Japan]. He's that big,” enthused Ichiro Suzuki’s agent Tony Attanasio when talking of his prized client. Ichiro’s impact on the sport in Japan and the United States is monumental, his talent unquestionable. “There's nobody like Ichiro in either league—now or ever. He exists strictly within his own world, playing a game 100-percent unfamiliar to everyone else. The game has known plenty of 'slap' hitters, but none who sacrifice so much natural ability for the sake of the art... ...
They are the moments that make fans cringe 25 years later. The mere mention of a name or a play make you want to want to curl up in the fetal position. The other fans love it. They mock you. They smile. They buy rounds for strangers at the bar just because that person mentioned the moment to set you off. And now, just when you thought the nightmare was over .... it's baaaaack. In celebration of the return of Freddie Krueger at midnight tonight, let's countdown the 25 biggest nightmare moments in sports history. Begin Slideshow

I am not sure about all of you, but back in my high school athletic days, I remember our athletic code focusing on a few basic points. You know, passing a certain number of classes, not smoking, drinking, and/or using drugs, showing good sportsmanship, etc. Basically, not engaging in behavior that was unbecoming an athlete— vague, yet understandable. And all of it centered on the athlete themselves not participating in said activities. Were there some that did? Of course, and it is probably misleading to use that word "some," since that would indicate a small number. Back during the 70's when I ...

Ben Roethlisberger, Tiger Woods and The Modern American Sex Scandal

By Scott Michael Leddy On April - 28 - 2010
It seems that one cannot open a newspaper or website without the words SEX, SCANDAL, or (gasp) both combined in a sports headline. Athletes have left politicians in the dust in terms of philandering and have become the new face of the modern-day sex scandal.  This is not shocking. Hell, this isn’t even really news. What is shocking is that so many Americans are shocked by the actions of these professional athletes. Why? You all remember the All-American jock in high school. He was cocky. He was insufferable. He wasn’t always bright, but boy did those ladies love him, and boy did ...

New York Yankees Set to Host the New Era Pinstripe Bowl

By Danielle Correa On April - 28 - 2010
Last week, the NCAA’s Football Issues Committee granted a four-year license to the New Era Pinstripe Bowl for 2010-2013.  This decision by the committee marks the first time that it has licensed a bowl on a four-year cycle instead of taking the traditional year-by-year route. What better place to host these bowl games than in the pinstripe kingdom itself—Yankee Stadium. The Yankees are extremely proud to offer the use of their home field to this event. Yankees President Randy Levine stated, “Yankee Stadium was built to be a premier destination not only for baseball but for other exceptional and memorable events. The tradition of ...
