I was watching LeBron James and the Miami Heat blast the Orlando Magic last night.  James got called for a foul which he didn’t believe was a good call.  James got called for a technical foul for running away from the referee in protest. Under the new “respect for the game” rule, players can neither be demonstrative when questioning fouls nor show excess exuberance if they make a good play. I think this new rule stinks.  I also feel it has racial undertones to it as well.  From my vantage point, it makes no sense why an athlete cannot feed off ...

NHL Black Perspective: Racism in the NHL Is Ridiculous

By Warren Shaw On October - 29 - 2010
The Atlanta Thrashers cannot seem to get a break. They drafted first round choices Dany Heatley and Ilya Kovalchuk but could not hold on to them. Marian Hossa and Marc Savard did not stay either. The management makes a shrewd move, trades Kovalchuk’s rights, and receives forward Niclas Bergfors, Defenseman Johnny Oduya, and top prospect Patrice Cormier. The previous regime drafted forward Evander Kane who currently leads the team in goals with 6 in 10 games. The team traded first round draft choices and a promising player, and received highly sought after Stanley Cup playoff hero Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, and prospect Akim Aliu. The trades ...
In the Harry Potter novels, Voldemort is also known as “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.”   In Tennessee Volunteers football lore, Lane Kiffin equals Lord Voldemort. The Vols’ controversial ex-coach infamously ditched Knoxville after a single season for the posh, golden coast of Los Angeles, and the head coaching job at the University of Southern California. Even in his lone season, Kiffin managed to cause controversy with false and thoughtless remarks, famously accusing Urban Meyer, University of Florida’s head coach, of NCAA violations. In reality, it was Kiffin who blatantly committed multiple NCAA violations, largely the result of his mouth—more specifically, the words he ...

LeBron James: My Response To His Nike Commercial

By Gene Zarnick On October - 25 - 2010
Everyone stop what you're doing right now.  Stop reading this column and go straight to Hallmark to purchase an "I'm Sorry LeBron" card. We've all wanted LeBron James to be someone he isn't and for that we should all apologize. If you haven't seen Nike's new LeBron James commercial then you can check it out below. The commercial showcases LeBron James speaking about some of his most criticized moments.  It opens up with LeBron reenacting The Decision and saying, "What should I do?  Should I admit that I've made mistakes?  Should I remind you I've done this before?" As the commercial progresses it continues the Should I concept; ...
Are people born greedy?  From the day out of the womb, we're told we can be what we want to be, do what we want to do and nothing is unachievable. Our goal in life isn't to help others. It's to help ourselves first, and along the way if we just so happen to improve someone else's life, then we did something right.  For some people these things can coincide; helping others is helping yourself. Let's face the facts here.  If your life mission and career path is in line with helping others, then you're doing it for yourself.  You enjoy the ...
I’ve always felt that as a gambler, you should always split any season into two parts just to keep things fresh. Whether you were the god or the goat of the first half of the season doesn’t matter, just remember there’s always tomorrow and always another line to lay your money on. So call it a rebirth, a reawakening, a resurrection or a rejuvenation—whatever floats your boat. Just look forward and continue to focus on the future. We’ve got some games sitting out there this Saturday that are just begging for some action. So, in the good spirit of all things holy, ...
