Both the calendar page and the greeting card companies dictate that the one day per year we are allowed to "honor thy father" (at least in this country) is the third Sunday of June. Since 1910, children around the globe have annually taken a mere 24 hours out of their busy lives to "celebrate fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society" by dousing Dads with a collection of humorous cards and never to be worn ties. If nothing else, Father's Day acts to provide a fitting and opposite book end to the prior month's holiday, Mother's Day. As ...
As many of my readers know, I'm a sucker for a good story. Not only to write one, which hopefully happens on occasion, but to read one. To become inspired, motivated, challenged and pushed to my own personal limits after reading it. I personally believe that the challenges of others are placed before us so that we can learn, grow, become better, and raise our own personal bar. This makes the "Why's" in life seem a little less arbitrary and a little bit more easily explained and accepted. "Why did this have to happen?" is easily explained by "Because it serves a ...
This Memorial Day weekend there will be 45 Major League Baseball games played. There was one Stanley Cup hockey game and an NBA playoff game with final scores in which one team beat the other. In the big picture, none of it truly matters. We banter daily around the water coolers about the "battles" that we won. Battles aren't fought on the hardwood or at the rink. On the diamond or on the gridiron. Battles are fought on the battlefield only. Blood isn't shed by guys in shoulder pads, cleats, or jock straps. Real blood is ...
The following is part of a weekly series in which writer Todd Civin presents the lighter side of the Boston Breakers of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). The league is built on the down-to-earth nature and approachability of its athletes. "Getting Silly with the Breakers" is a fun-filled way to create a comfortable bond between the fans and the professional athletes who are the Boston Breakers. A special thanks to Erica Hunt, the Communications Director for the team, as well as the players themselves for making this approach possible.   It is difficult for ...
On the 22nd day of March during a wide-ranging span of years throughout history, the Heavens parted and out dropped the likes of many famous individuals from various walks of life including: comedian Chico Marx (1887), actor Karl Malden (1912), "Captain Kirk" William Shatner (1931), Canadian figure skater Elvis Stojko (1972), actress Reese Witherspoon (1976), composer Andrew Lloyd Weber (1948) and sportscaster Bob Costas (1952). Each spent this day celebrating the anniversary of their birth some number of years ago. Little did Boston Breakers' midfielder Jen Nobis know that when parents Pam and Mike Nobis headed for that little hospital in ...
Over the past several months, one of my wildest baseball dreams has been realized. Having not been blessed with an overabundance of skill on the baseball field, it is beyond my greatest expectations that I would ever have the chance to rub elbows with one of the chosen ones who has been blessed with extraordinary baseball skills. As surreal as it seems to me, Cleveland Indians pitcher, Jason Grilli and I became buddies last November through our work with the award winning children's baseball book, A Glove of Their Own .  We have since become good friends over the six or so ...

That someone who is destined to be home alone on Valentines Day, while you're busy knocking back ...

This Year, I Resolve To Eat From Life’s Table

By Todd Civin On December - 31 - 2009
"Spread love everywhere you go; first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be living expression of God's kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting."-Mother Teresa While many sports lovers see New Year's Day as a day to watch copious football, recover from ample over indulgence and, this year, to prepare for hockey from, of all places, Fenway Park, I am trying to embrace ...
