Archive for January, 2011

Throughout the history of American sports, there has been many athletes that have lost their lives while still active in their respective sport. While tragic events are just part of life, it can be very difficult to accept that fact that you will never see your favorite pro sports hero again. In this piece, I will examine the top 10 American professional sports stars that left this earth way too early.Begin Slideshow
Before big movie roles and flying body-slams, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was making a name for himself on the football field.Yes, that's right, Mr. Six-pack with the Million-Dollar Smile was dropping bodies on the field before he ever thought about stepping into a wrestling ring. Johnson was heavily sought after by many top colleges before deciding to take a full scholarship ride at the University of Miami. In his first year as a Hurricane, his team won a national championship. In 1994 (his senior year), Johnson suffered a major back injury which would forever cripple his football career and ruin his ...

Athletes and the Price of Twitter: Fools Rush in To Tweet

By Matt Goldberg On January - 30 - 2011
In just the last seven days, the Super Bowl participants have been decided, tennis has crowned its first major champions of 2011 and the All-Star teams have been chosen in the NBA and the NHL. That’s just a lightning-quick survey of five of the many sports that fans are passionate about. Concurrent with this, much of the sports news has been generated by tweets hammered out by the likes of current and former NFL players and, yes, a certain tennis mom. Most of these tweets have shared the following qualities: They are mean-spirited, clueless, and unfortunate. Such rantings from the Twittersphere ...
Every morning when I wake up, I pour my favorite cereal into a bowl, I grab my laptop, I turn my television on, and I plant myself on my couch.  I am now a multi-tasking machine: I am eating my breakfast as I am watching sports on television, while I am surfing the Internet for any interesting sports stories.  If it wasn't for me facing the reality again, I would probably remain in this exact spot all day.  I am what you call a sports enthusiast.  I absolutely love sports.  I can not get enough of it.  I'm not the ordinary sports ...
As a huge fan of the NFL, I am personally sick and tired of hearing about the back and forth squabbling that has been going on between the NFLPA and the NFL owners over the expiring collective bargaining agreement. The fact of the matter is I could care less what the new CBA looks like; I just want a full season without any lockouts or strikes. However, my distaste for the subject rose to all new levels over the past few weeks as I have began to hear parties on both sides of the talks arguing that their side is what ...
I promised myself I wouldn’t watch American Idol on Fox this season. With Simon Cowell off the panel, I didn’t want to invest my time in another show that features Randy Jackson, know what I mean, dawg? Wednesday night, however, I found myself channel surfing and caught the tail-end of A-I in Milwaukee. I’m extremely grateful I did. I still find Jackson annoying. Jennifer Lopez is pretty to look at, but doesn’t offer much, and Steven Tyler has surprisingly been informative and entertaining. The judges won’t be an issue, but the real reason why I’m going to watch this season ...
Honestly their are quite a few things that tick me off about sports. Some of these include Ben Roethlisberger, racism (not what you're thinking), and people who say the SEC is overrated in football. I have kept quiet on most of these issues, but most of my articles still cause controversy and today I am going all out. After this article I will be blasted, hated, and possibly suffer nightmares related to being strangled by Pittsburgh Steelers fans by way of Terrible Towel. Despite this, I will not be silenced—I will express my distaste for the things I hate in sports. So without further ...
As we come closer to the NBA trade deadline and the Super Bowl around the corner, Phoenix sports fans are once again disengaged. Not because we do not like sports, but the irrelevance of Phoenix’s franchises have forced people into casual, at best, followers.  Phoenix is the fifth-largest city in the United States, making it the biggest city not to enjoy a major sports championship, besides the 2001 Diamondbacks. I have lived in Phoenix for four years now and have grown to love the local franchises. After multiple seasons of hope and frustration, I am beginning to wonder why Phoenix ...

The Ladies of the NFL

By Rachel Miller On January - 26 - 2011
Super Bowl XLV between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers is right around the corner and so without further ado, here's some photos of the hottest women in the National Football League. They're of course are the cheerleaders of the NFL. The NFL cheerleading phenomenon began when the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders first danced their way onto the sidelines of Texas Stadium back in 1972.Since then, numerous other NFL teams formed their own cheerleading squads of young women all dressed up in glitter and sequins as the NFL cheerleading craze burst onto our television screens for the next four decades. Please check ...

Why I Hunt: Childhood Confrontation Leads to Personal Epiphany

By John Zaktansky On January - 25 - 2011
It is amazing how just a few words can crush someone. How they can hit harder than a Muhammed Ali uppercut, totally unexpected yet so devastating.I was a teenager at the time. My father, younger brother and I had hunted deer religiously every season for years at the Montour Preserve public hunting lands in central Pennsylvania. We were lucky to even see a deer those days, not to mention seeing a deer in the right season and in a safe shooting position. We grew up on a small farm near McEwensville, Pennsylvania, milking cows, raising chickens and turkeys, pigs and a ...
