Is the Brady Rule Racist or Just Affirmative Action for White Guys?

By David Xaviel is the Hobby Horse On August - 14 - 2009
Recently, I struck up a debate on whether the NFL is racist programming. Yes, ESPN has allowed the NFL to promote racist systems. Thanks to the antitrust exemption on media rights given by the US Congress to the NFL in 1960, ESPN's complicity has not been by choice. Thus, ESPN will do whatever the NFL wants, because if ESPN does not follow, then the NFL can pull ESPN's ability to cover the NFL. Why did I think to report ESPN to the FCC?  The reason is that if ESPN is unwilling to question the racism that the NFL pushes down ...

Is Bill Belichick a Genius Or Are Sports Journalists Just That Gullible?

By David Xaviel is the Hobby Horse On August - 3 - 2009
(Now listening to, "The Weight" by The Band) I could have stated that I was listening to "The Pusher" by Steppenwolf, but alas, I have not smoked a lot of grass, or popped a lot of pills. The reason why I could have said that is because the title of that song will lead to an abstract leap in my mind about the sports media being pushers of what they want you to believe, not what is actually true. We can thank Michael Vick for proving it. Follow me on this. All that Bill Belichick had to do was passively praise Vick's athleticism and ...

Have I Libeled You? An Honest Request For Constructive Criticism

By David Xaviel is the Hobby Horse On August - 3 - 2009
I have written internet journalism for over a year now. In that time, I have published stories on topics that I believe have been ignored by the mainstream media. Why do I do that? I do believe that many in the mainstream of media are hindered by forces that do not affect a blogger, such as a paycheck and adherence to the authority of those who give that paycheck (e.g., newspaper companies, and advertisers). At the same time, those in the mainstream have more training in their field, and are less likely to make costly mistakes, but more timid to cover a controversial subject.  I ...

They Are Who We Thought They Were: Sex Sells in Case of Erin Andrews

By David Xaviel is the Hobby Horse On July - 30 - 2009
In the past few weeks since the controversial video of Erin Andrews that was obtained through illegal means, there has been plenty of rancor from both sides of the issue. On one side, the pervs that have been conditioned into thinking that it is okay to invade someone's privacy if enough people would agree. It is a reminder to me that privacy cannot be subjected to a vote.  Similar to that old abstract question on the dangers of mob-rule, "If a group of people voted to rape someone, would that make it okay?" On the other side, we have the colleagues and journalists of ...

You Talkin’ To Me? Is Blogging Heroic or Villainous?

By David Xaviel is the Hobby Horse On July - 30 - 2009
"You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me?  You talkin' to me?  Then who the hell else are you talkin' to? You talkin' to me? Well I'm the only one here.  Who the f*** do you think you're talking to?" "Roger Ebert called this quote 'the truest line in the film.'  This line was also described by Ebert as 'Travis Bickle's ... desperate need to make some kind of contact somehow—to share or mimic the effortless social interaction he sees all around him, but does not participate in.'" I also like this Kris Kristofferson song, which was used in Taxi Driver.  ...

Remember the Titans: The Cases of Pacman Jones and Ben Roethlisberger

By David Xaviel is the Hobby Horse On July - 26 - 2009
Call me campy or sentimental or whatever you need to say in order to denigrate what I have to say, with generalizations about why you think you're strong-minded and I'm weak minded. Because if you do, I don't care what you think.  Obviously, I'm referring to an abstract stereotype of potential criticism of my views.  So, you shouldn't take it personally, unless you consciously and actively act that way. The bottom line is however that racism still permeates our society, and if you think the election of Barack Obama has made it better—in the case of some people, it has made it worse. In ...
