Is This the Best Time Ever to Be an Atlanta Sports Fan?

By Mike Foster On June - 21 - 2010
Time to jump on the bandwagon, folks. Despite Atlanta being labeled a "transplant" city, full of sports fans from Boston, Los Angeles, and New Orleans, to the boroughs of Alabama and South Carolina, being a hometown fan couldn't come at a better time. I'm proud to say that my faithfulness to my hometown sports teams, as a resident of metro Atlanta, is paying off. I'm also proud to see fans show up for games, even if they are just a bunch of fair-weather fans. But to those who have emotionally connected to the woeful franchises of the past, now is your time to give ...

Sports Over Education? Georgia Legislators Might Think So

By Mike Foster On March - 10 - 2010
“The theater department got cut at my school, but at least the roof on that new stadium slides open and closed” The backwards statement posted above might be a realistic thought in the coming years if you are a student at a college or universtiy run by the State University System of Georgia. This week, Georgia legislatures passed a Bill that has opened the gates for millions of dollars to flood towards funding for the Georgia Dome site in downtown Atlanta. Notice you don't see old pencil sketch logos, or wacky uniforms--for the most part. We are in an area where sports identities come with bold and streamlined logos, extremely distinctly designed uniforms, and an emphasis on standardization of trademarks. ...

By Mike Foster On November - 5 - 2009
There has never once been a sporting experience in my life where I did not find one of the attendees excessively unpleasant. Whether it be high school, pee wee, college, or NFL, the annoying fans are sure to show up. They take on many forms, but the one thing they all have in common is that they are completely clueless as to how much everyone around them wants them to leave. Annoying fans can even catch you outside of a game, whether it be at a sports bar, a college classroom, or some delusional stranger who spotted the college logo embroidered on ...
The media really is a powerful tool. Not only does it expose our interests, it also has a very heavy influence on our perspective in our general lives. However, it can be abused, and very easily. Basically, the good and the bad balance out, and as an aspiring journalist who is constantly monitoring sports press to learn tricks of the trade, I learned of its powerful influences this past week. I am no tennis fan—as a matter of fact, I can honestly say I would watch bowling before I watched tennis—but for the past week it was all I watched. Why? The media ...
