In operating any line of business, the primary question is both straightforward and obvious: Can we make a profit? What would happen if America’s colleges asked it about their sports enterprises? A recent CNNMoney.com article ("College Football’s $1.1 Billion Profit," Dec. 29, 2010) stated a rosy case for the upside of big-time college football.  The nation’s top five revenue-generating football powers (Texas, Georgia, Penn State, Michigan and Florida) earned 11 percent more profit in 2010 than in 2009, netting over $1 billion for the first time in history. The article states that, on the strength of lucrative TV deals, ticket sales and ...
On Tuesday, the NFL did not play its first rescheduled game. Almost every other year, some sort of damage is done to the infrastructure of this stadium or that which makes the wizards behind the scheduling move things around. When the Vikings were told they'd have to wait around for a few extra days before they could chase Michael Vick around, it wasn't because something was wrong with the stadium. Something was wrong with the weather. Or was it? In this day and age, technology's impact is changing not only the way games are played, but how they're viewed, also. Let ...

NFL: Too Much Money, Too Much Talent and The Integrity of Football

By Cameron Weimer On December - 28 - 2010
The NFL and Division I College football bring in plenty of money over a course of a whole season.  Through merchandising and advertising worldwide, as well as "at the stadium" sales, it’s safe to say they gross billions of dollars. But why limit this revenue to 32 teams? Why expand to an 18-game season? If the integrity of football wants to maintain itself in coming years, some questions need to be answered. “For the first pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the owners select (enter stud or bust)…” These are the words most of us will hear come late April, but are the players ...
Bipolar disorder is a physical disease of the brain affecting the thoughts, feelings, perception, and behavior of the afflicted. The name "bipolar" stems from the nature of the illness.  The moods of a person suffering from bipolar disorder typically range from euphoria to despondence, at times random, or at times triggered by an action or event. This oscillation between extreme mood states, commonly called “mood swings,” is indeed abnormal and can be dangerous to the life of a person with bipolar disorder. Bipolars are, at the least, annoying to those close to the them.  The mood swings influence the person’s inability to live ...
Merry Christmas readers!Believe it or not, today isn't all about getting presents, Santa Claus and more presents.Just about 2,000 years ago, Jesus was born in a manger in the city of Bethlehem. That's what Christmas is really all about. Here is a holiday special, the NFL's All-Christian team. This is a remix of an article I wrote last Easter about the NFL's All-Time Christian Team.About the list:It's not who I think is the best person; the most talented player receives their positional spot.I guarantee this team is flawed because there is no complete list of Christian football players that I have access to. If I left ...

MADRID, Spain — If you could have front-row tickets to any sporting contest ever, what would it be?A classic rematch like Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier? Something more modern, like a LeBron vs. Kobe one-on-one?Well, if you’re a tennis fan it doesn’t get much better than Rafael Nadal vs. Roger Federer. The only thing that could make these epic battles possibly more quixotic would be to take the obscene amount of cash these events would bring in and, say, donate it to charity…oh, right before Christmas, no less! Yeah, that would be the best. While Kobe vs. LeBron might be ...
With just over six months on the job, West Virginia University Athletic Director Oliver Luck made a bold move, and some of his critics say that he handled it poorly, mistreating Bill Stewart after years of faithful service.  Bill Stewart is out, and Dana Holgorsen is in, but not until 2012.  In 2011, Holgorsen will act as WVU's offensive coordinator under Bill Stewart and assume head coaching responsibilities the following year when Bill Stewart takes a position in the school’s athletic department.  So, what does that spell for next year?  A closer look at this decision reveals an interesting possibility—the possibility ...

The controversies keep piling up for the New York Jets this season.Michelle Ryan, wife of New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, is facing allegations that she starred in amateur foot fetish videos that were released by Deadspin Tuesday evening. “I never realized how similar I am to Tom Brady,” Rex Ryan said. “The fact that he’s married to a supermodel? Yes, I’m also married to a super model.” That quote was taken from a press conference held on Monday, Nov. 29 as the Jets head coach showed reporters a full-page NFL Women’s Apparel ad featuring his wife, Michelle. ...

NFL Picks Week 15: Pick 3 Against the Spread

By GB Bongiovanni On December - 18 - 2010
Understanding what you are betting on and knowing your limitations are the keys to being a successful gambler. Looking at a sports line, you will see that there is an underdog and a favorite. Generally, the point spread is next to the favored team and is, thus, a negative number. For instance the Indianapolis Colts are a favorite this week by four and a half points (-4.5) and the Jacksonville Jaguars are the underdog receiving the four and a half points (+4.5). There are two-point spread bets available on this game. If the Colts win by five or ...
