Let’s get the obvious out of the way.  Immediately upon reading the title you’re probably expecting me to be a dog lover who still hasn't forgiven Michael Vick for his deplorable actions. Part of that statement may be accurate, but I’m not a dog lover.  I love my dog and that’s it.  In fact, I can’t stand dog lovers. When I visit home, I sometimes take my dog to a dog park that is located on an old nine hole golf course.  There are trails through the woods for my dog to roam and agility courses and ponds for her to play ...

Barry Bonds Trial and the Corruption from All Sides

By Gene Zarnick On April - 8 - 2011
Barry Bonds' fate was finally put into a jury of his peers' hands yesterday after 11 trial days and seven-and-a-half years of persecution by the United States Government.I know most of you are probably on the edge of your seats just waiting for the verdict in such an integral case in our country's history.  This case could be pivotal in setting precedent for exactly how to waste millions of our tax dollars in the pursuit of a high-profile athlete who may have lied in an effort to either protect himself or protect a childhood friend. If you haven't noticed yet, I'm ...
Earlier this week, HBO Real Sports aired a piece about four former Auburn football players who spoke about receiving cash handshakes during their recruitment and throughout their football careers.  The unlawful conduct spoken about from these former athletes paints a very clear picture of what NCAA sports are all about–Money.I get it. Then again, I've always gotten it.  The NCAA is about money.  It's a business that capitalizes on the success of NCAA athletes and in turn puts a hefty profit into many old men's' tailored suit pockets. It's a system that is far from perfect in one sense, but profitability-wise, ...

My Tourney Trip: From Phantom Row to Front Row

By Gene Zarnick On March - 29 - 2011
It’s amazing how much can change in a single year. Last year, my Dad and I were first row upper deck for the NCAA Tournament. This year, we were first row from the court. If you had the chance to read my tournament trip column from last year, then you’ll understand just how much has actually changed in my life. I’ve got a new job and a new state of residence.  I’m living in my own place without my family or best friends around. Though it’s been a big change, everything has been positive. Not that I wouldn’t want to live closer to my friends or family, but ...

Bill Simmons Rebuttal: Greed Is Good

By Gene Zarnick On March - 7 - 2011
If you haven't read Bill Simmons' most recent column: Greed is good in NFL labor talks then you may not get the whole gist of my rebuttal.  I wouldn't even call it a rebuttal; it's actually just a column that shows the other side of things. Thanks to Bill Simmons and I hope you enjoy.Take a deep breath, suspend all disbelief and walk through the following hypothetical (and admittedly ridiculous) scenario with me...It's December 1994.I'm 10 years old, growing up in Western Pennsylvania, and my dream is to become a national sports writer.   Western PA is known as a hotbed for sportswriters. Many great ...
Are some sports really meaningless?  If you turn on ESPN or listen to the radio then it would sure seem so.How many times have you heard these remarks? The college basketball season is meaningless due to the size of the tournament field.Baseball's regular season is meaningless because there's 162 games in the season.Fights are meaningless in the game of hockey.Every day there's a new person saying something in sports is meaningless.  The problem is that they forget to extend their sentence and say it's meaningless to them.I just don't get it.  If something is so meaningless then why are you talking ...

Ron Artest Is the Whitest Player in the NBA

By Gene Zarnick On November - 17 - 2010
Ron Artest has been called many things.  White is not one of them.A player who will be remembered for two things that have nothing to do with basketball; one being the immediate gratitude towards his psychiatrist after the NBA Finals Game 7 win last year and the other being the fan melee in the Palace of Auburn Hills.Artest grew up in the rough neighborhoods of Queensbridge, NY, witnessed a tragic murder at a YMCA, and has produced his own rap album. He’s controversial and zany; once showing up to a Pacers practice in a robe and during his rookie season he ...

LeBron James: My Response To His Nike Commercial

By Gene Zarnick On October - 25 - 2010
Everyone stop what you're doing right now.  Stop reading this column and go straight to Hallmark to purchase an "I'm Sorry LeBron" card. We've all wanted LeBron James to be someone he isn't and for that we should all apologize. If you haven't seen Nike's new LeBron James commercial then you can check it out below. The commercial showcases LeBron James speaking about some of his most criticized moments.  It opens up with LeBron reenacting The Decision and saying, "What should I do?  Should I admit that I've made mistakes?  Should I remind you I've done this before?" As the commercial progresses it continues the Should I concept; ...
Are people born greedy?  From the day out of the womb, we're told we can be what we want to be, do what we want to do and nothing is unachievable. Our goal in life isn't to help others. It's to help ourselves first, and along the way if we just so happen to improve someone else's life, then we did something right.  For some people these things can coincide; helping others is helping yourself. Let's face the facts here.  If your life mission and career path is in line with helping others, then you're doing it for yourself.  You enjoy the ...
Gross. Creepy. Perverted. Disgusting. Inappropriate. Definitely a well rounded set of adjectives to describe Brett Favre after what we have heard and seen from the allegations that he was inappropriately contacting New York Jets employee Jenn Sterger. Heroic. Leader. Winner. Persistent. Determined. A completely different set of adjectives that describes Brett's on-the-field attributes. Now as sports fans we're stuck in a predicament.  We have an NFL legend that we thought exemplified the same characteristics off-the-field that he does on-the-field and now we're supposed to decide how he will be remembered once he leaves the game for the fourth or fifth time. In today's society. it seems like we're supposed to be ultra sensitive ...
